Just write a press release and send it in by mail. Add a mp3 as attachment. Also include extra information like a site or band camp page. Maybe a link where they can also download a wav version if needed.

Make it look official:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Today 'artist' released a new track/ song 'title'.
Background info/ bio.

For the editorship:

For more information go to: http://www.internetsite.com Twitter:@goodmusic
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
'Release' it on your site or facebookpage by promoting it beforehand, making people looking forward to it.

The more professional it looks, the bigger the opportunity they will check it out. If it's good and fits the show/ station they will play it.

Even better if you know one of the editors or dj's and approach them personally.

EDIT: Bigger stations usually pick their own stuff. Especially something like I-tunes radio.

Thanks Menco! Good information, advertising and marketing are one of the biggest things or as important as the music itself sometimes and its helps to get a good understanding of it. Especially in todays time where the musician/artist is doing everything themselves.
