i got beats i got artists BUT I GOTTA ?

yo whut up yall i am in chicago OKAY DOWN TO bizness i know a ton of rappers dey know i got beats and i am shopping them to people and of course they want them but dont nobody wanna pay sh!t AND I AINT ASKING MUCH TRUST ME!! so i am like am just do an best of album cats i know dats nice flowing ova my beats i think its a win-win sorta thing cuz its exposure for me and the artist I EVEN GIVING THEM OFF FREE!!! I JUST WANNA KNOW THIS!!! have any of yall ever taken this route? also did it workout 4 you? if so what should i lookout for anything to but cautious of?

AND PROLLY THE MOST IMPORTANT THING: i think i need a manager cuz i wanna submit my ish to the majors! where do i find em and how long do you give him/her to make something pop b4 you let them go? i mean i aint talking bout getting deals i mean more getting meeting atleast to get the communication started THANX YALL SORRY IF THS POST IS TOOO LONG OR AINT ALL THAT CLEAR

My friend I used to have that same problem (people not giving full price) sometimes there is a sacrifice that needs to be made in order to recieve exposure. I've also noticed that it's better to work with people you don't know different work ethic.-- as far as shopping beats ---copyright and get manager

sell you beats for chump change..........

and then sell them again for chump change.....

personally I aint signing over (rights and such) $hit for less than 4 figures.....

cats may get heated if they find out, but $hit its just another hustle

You got all these cats now willing to give away beats to big names for exposure, add that to the popularity of keyboard based beats. It a dead end IMO.

Last time I had a meeting with an A&R he told me I needed to cop a specific sound module b/c that is whats hot right now....(it made me want to puke) He said the progamming is good but...sample clearance, radio play, club friendly, blah blah blah (I tuned out after a while)

I make my $$$ engineering, DJing, and husling beats (see above for method)...


I aint sayin a fukin with the majors as a producer is impossible its just an unfriendly game

I have been there, but it wasn't about sample clearance. This cat wanted Triton sounds.... That schit is very true... It happens.

i'd say start your own shit. get the MCs to rap over your beats an just go out and release a tape or something.

this way YOU can handle your business and you probably can make more money with that, and go tell the MCs that it's good for them cuz they get promotion for free.

Since you're producing music at such a high rate, you should link up with a label. Big; small; don't matter....Also make goals for yourself. Currently I have 200 songs in my catalogue and if I sale them at $25 per beat, I can buy that Phantom & a MPC.(Then I can charge more). There are tricks and trades to this game. For one, write hooks to all your beats so the artist will feel it's easy to wrok with you over other producers. You have to work in phases on your plan. Ther first step is what I meantioned and the second is linking up with a label once you got some hott eq. All your $$$ should go back in the pot. Buy better stuff and release CDs every now and then. Pass them out when everyone coming out the clubs, mix tape dJz, radio stations, and look into commercials and more other avenues for your music than just "rappers". The Christian Hip-Hop scene is hott because they always havea crowd. Of course main stream aint tryin' to hear it because of this guy , but music is universal so go that route...Peace out!

..but keeping it on topic...These cats are on point the industry is garbage. Now you got composers and other musicians trying to get in on the hustle, more as each day passes, plus a lot of sh*t is hand-picked or whatever.

I'm kinda in the same boat, except I done tried the artist thing. And seriously if these cats ain't truly generating a buzz for their sh*t it ain't gon' do nothin for ya except make your beats stale. Cats gotta be doin a few shows a month, releasing street singles or pushin a 12" and real sh*t like that. I mean man, it takes serious money to push an album properly these days. I've watched at least 4 independent acts or groups I've either produced for or done engineering work for press up 1,000 or more CD's and FLOP!! And the worst part was they flopped because they weren't hungry and willing to push their own music like a mad man. I could go on man, it's a lame situation these days with a lotta cats.

Just do your sh*t for you and focus on making some money at the same time creating music and enjoying yourself in the process. If you are going to stick your neck out weed through some cats and find somebody you think you can trust to do some work when it counts. Anything less is not worth your time. A little lengthy there sorry bout that.

I've done some experimenting and I've come up with the perfect formula to shop your beats(what to ask for). This is a business, so if local cats don't wanna give you what they owe, then F**K EM and then stack your beats, get a manager and wait for a major deal.

500.00/Track(Exclusive Rights)

Royalties: Album Sales 10% Mechanical- Whatever you can get(or what they owe)

Performance 50% Merchandising 20%


Copyright: PA 50% SR Whatever you can get


And last but not least: PRODUCTION CREDIT

If the artist/group sell their cd for $10/cd and sells 1,000 units, every producer in here will get their $1,000.00/track(plus, minus the administration costs). Local artist have to step up their marketing techniques if they wanna be successful and like I said if they don't wanna pay that, then MUTHAF**K THEM CHEAP B****RDS.
