cdj legalities

hi there,

whats the copy right rules with regards to playing a set eg in a club, and playing tracks off an album cd and not a single.

can you only play tracks that have been released as a single or as a single promo or can u play anything?

thanks for the answer, just wasnt sure after reading the copyright stuff on the back of a cd album with it saying about prohibiting public performance, i.e. playing it in public, which would in my eyes constitute a club environment.

no worries man - no you're not thick, my friend...

i have never personally seen anything on cd's that says "no public performance" - that's why i thought it was a joke... now that you say that - i have no idea about that stuff -

however, i would go off of this rule of thumb -

if you are in a smaller club/venue (basically, not a stadium, or somewhere where you're recorded/videotaped) -

do what YOU wanna do, my friend.

there shouldn't be any laws on publicly playing a cd before a club audience, or any audience, for that matter.

i mean what constitutes a venue as a "club" - i could open the doors to my house and charge friends or family (not even strangers) $10 or $5 pounds to come in and listen to me play music. i could say that *that* music was just being played for the people's enjoyment, so as to enhance their experience during their stay with me/at the venue...

so yeah, if a cd says that - that's bull... i wouldn't even sweat it - most artists would fall over knowing you played their joints at a club, or that their records were in rotation on the underground...

let's not forget - it's that underground and college DJ that plays the records that usually break into the mainstream. so if someone put that on their cd, then they must have made that CD for their own enjoyment, and either way - their junk won't stand up in a court of law...

if it's hot, alex - just drop the needle on it...

ps - see what some other UK members on the site have to say about this... because there might be things that are going on there (i.e. - the notice on the cd's) that are not going on in the USA, though i doubt any of that stuff could or would get u into any legal trouble... basically a discouragement i think, to raise doubt maybe... but ask a UK head on here.
