beats just not sellable anymore? experiences?

Talk about the music biz - marketing, promotions, contract law, copyright etc...

beats just not sellable anymore? experiences?

I am finding it harder and harder to sell beats as i have become better at producing. When i used to produce really crappy crunk/gangsta rubbish people used to hit me up all the time. For me though that was just a way of learning. Now i have developed my own style i have to give them away for crazy prices. Over the last week i have been pushing a deal whereby they can get all my beats together for 200 on lease. To me this is ridiculous and a bit soul destroying, but people still arnt going for it. Now im starting to think i should develop some kind of alias and start making commercial rubbish under a different name just to fund my hobby. Does anyone else have to find a balance between what they like to produce and what they can realistically sell to the market?

Engineers go through this their whole lives, or to a lesser degree, most of it.
Balance things out. We all have to eat. As long as you know whats up, and you know what your about. F it, pay your car note, light bill, etc.

I exaclty know what you're sayin...
people like cheap synthie beats more than beats with soul..
last weeak, a guy wanted me to make 8 exclusive beats for him.. "but I cant pay you.. it's like promo for you!".. and his skills on the mic are soo **** wack..

you need to hit up the right guys..

promo for you is code for I'm broke and need free beats. They don't do much for you at all lol. The best thing anyone can do right now in the game is find a group and do it old school kuz beats just ain't selling anymore. The game is WAY over saturated. People expect 5 mic beats for nothing now and Mcs feel they deserve it because they feel they are more important than producers

if they arent willing to pay for the asking price then they are not serious about investing in there craft. When you give beats for free or cheap, theres a good chance they might not even be used.
That free promo line is old and it does you no good if the person is unknown and most likely, will only get you other broke dudes. When they talk about you, it will be more like "yeah I can get free beats from this dude". Now if you charge $300 for a beat, it will be more like "Hell yeah that beat is dope thats why I paid $300 for it".
That free promo sh!t will not get you people that are willing to pay. Once they are talking about you and how much they paid to someone else, that other person already has an idea of what you charge and will consider paying, instead of thinking they might be able to get free beats too.

ye i can tell u dat people like synthie type ish more den a beat with more soul in it,Its true wat ur sayin this guy wants club type beats from me, the same thing he told me promo for me he ain t got money to pay for ish an his skills are below average but i go on anyway

Free beats can be good promo,but don't give the exclusives out for free.Make some beats free and put somewhere that they can only be used for non profit use with your written expressed consent untill the exclusives are purchased.That way they get the "free" beat and you still get to sell it.

I checked out your myspace your tracks are very sick. You have a unique but still popular and familiar sound.

Wayyyy to mellow for my tastes.. But I've only heard what is on your myspace.

You may need to take it to the next level forget trying to sell a beat to an artist.

and also one thing you have to remember is if you want to get paid sometimes you gotta tailor your work to what the people want at the moment.

that is part of being a professional artist.. you gotta give the people what they want to get paid sometimes :P

Were doing an internet radio discussion on my Ozone radio show this weekend. Probably air it next weekend, but I'll let you know. I'm gonna get deep on this. We have about 6 producers and 6 Mc's/rappers to give their point of view. Why rappers they can't afford beats, but can smoke blunts daily. Even with free beats, most rappers accumulate a cd's worth of material, sell it cheap, and give the contributing producers nothing. I'm not going to give it all ways, but I think it will be nice and heated. I'll keep you all posted tho.. last weeks discussion was suppose to be 15 minutes and we ended up doing (two) 1 hour talks about what makes someone Hip-Hop. Just because you make rap music doesn't mean you represent hip-hop. nahmean. Anyways, I don't wanna jack the thread. Please continue! :)
