all i can say, like someone else said, do not get into this for money, you wont be making it after you graduate unless you are very very lucky, or extrmely talented and already have a great network built up.

if you want to learn how to recoord, and mix your own music then go for it, but dont exepect to be making money right out of school from doing it.

real famous engineers cost a lot of money, so most local people wont want to pay for top tier engineering, and if they do, they already pay for that, so they wont go to you.
also no one will want to pay you to mix their stuff when they could do it by themselves in their home studios.
most established local acts will already have someone they work with that mixes and masters all of their stuff, so its pretty hard in that area to find people who will give you a chance too.
i cant tell you how frustrating it can be knowing that you can mix circles around a lot of people, but they arent willing to pay for recording or mixing because they think they can do by themselves simply because they have a computer program.
thats not to say that some people cant do it themselves, because a lot of bands/rappers are really good at mixing their own stuff, but you will also run into a lot of people who think they can do it themselves but really cant, and wont listen to you when you say you can mix for them. or they will be all about it until you tell them how much it costs. :Sigh:

if you keep on keeping on, you will be able to find some artists that will come to you, or you can network withe people and possibly build a small clientele, but the vast majority of the time, most people already have this covered.

the bottom line is, do this for your own personal hobby, satisfaction, fun, knowledge, ect ect. dont get into this industry to make money because most likely you wont make much unless you put in years of work for little to no pay.

if your looking for money, would learn a trade that will guarantee you work when you get out of school, then take some audio classes on the side.

like ill green said, there is some audio schools that you can do at your own pace and you can even do online with whatever program you have. that might be something to think about.
