Ain't nothing wrong with selling, a 'CD case' and including a free cd for free
Problem is you won't get paid for the music and get royalties and sh*t like that, without authorizing the samples.
That's the catch 22. You'll get paid. (for the cd case, but not the music, and therefore don't own publishing, royalties, etc.
But this advice will/can relieve a lot of stress for those huslin to get that paper and their heat heard on the streets without worrying about the samplin police knocking on your door... But a good way to, get your stuff heard using samples, without paying for/clearing them up till that point when you'd be more in the business of dealing with selling music and not huslin CD cases with your 'free cd'.
But if you can do it on a large scale, it could be just as profitable as 'selling music', specially if you cut out a major label for distribution. I heard an artist only gets back $1 on a cd sold for $15. And then gotta use those earnings to pay back the advance money from the label. You end up with next to nothing with selling your album. This is how the labels would profit, so with cd sales declining, they ain't making that money no more. Artist still are though, with getting spins on the radio and through that system of things.
File sharing, and digitizing of music to the internet is only killing the labels from profiting on selling a material good (the cd), but it's helping artists and producers on a huge scale. Before the internet, the only way to hear anyone was a cd,tape,record,word of mouth,tv,etc And it was hard(er) to network. Today.. Myspace, youtube, all these forums, websites and cross-promoting on websites, and all for CHEAP or free. It is much more artist, producer, people friendly in the music scene on the whole in general. The creative individual has more control these days, and is not at the mercy of the label (which is only like a bank that gives you a loan to sell and distribute, same as getting a mortgage, they believe in you that you'll pay it back)
The best way to hustle is digitally through the net and completely cut out any labels, cause their promoting, support, and distribution is not needed. Or sell your music directly to the radio stations or Djs, so they can use it to draw audiences for marketing of other products, like tv shows for airing commercials.
It's to difficult to control the general public from copying cd's, sharing and playing music, but it can still be controlled in terms of using it over the radio and on tv, as well as on the net, meaning someone playing your music on a website to promote and sell thier product is no different then tv or radio.
