Does anyone use MPC2500 & Logic Studio?

I'm wondering if anyone records their MPC2500 tracks into Logic Studio? If this is possible can someone please give me a slightly detailed description of how to do this? Right now I have an MPC2500 and I'm thinking about getting an iMac. What will I need to get the job done? Will I need an interface and if so what kind? Any info would be really appreciated.

yep, i do it.

you will need an interface. i use a firewire motu interface on my macbook pro. sounds great. if you're getting a new imac, beware of fw800 only ports.

really, these sort of questions are best explained by a manual -- either the logic pro/express manual or a book -- "logic 8 power" is good for this. but to answer your question vaguely, yes it's possible, yes people do it, yes it's common.

be aware that logic 8 cannot be slaved to external midi clock, if you want the mpc to be the master you have to fiddle with the mtc settings. the fire wire ports can all be used with fw 400 gear, just check to get the proper fw 400 to 800 cables ot the fitting adapters. be aware if you daisy chain fw 400 and 800 devices that chain will operate at 400 speed only.

have fun reading the logic manual... it is just about 1200 pages plus about 700 for fx and instruments and another 300 for easy start, soundtrack pro and mainstage... all printed inside the box!!! and on pdf!!!

before spending money on an interface you should think about your needs and then better buy less channels of good quality than many channels of vague quality. choose firewire over usb even if somebody tells you "usb is faster on paper" or "all consumer grade equipment has usb these days", for audio firewire still is better.

Would I be able to do this with an Alesis MultiMix Firewire Mixer or do you have to run from the mixer into the interface and then into the Mac?

^ an Alesis MultiMix would work just fine. 8 ins is good, esp with your 2500.

i've always thought the alesis mixer/interfaces were on the cheap side so beware on that end.

What kind of cable is that? It looks like a USB to MIDI or something. What do you do with that cable? What do you use with that cable?

It's an M-Audio Uno. Basicaaly a 1 in, 1 out midi interface that connects to your computer via USB. This will only do midi messages, no audio whatsoever. Careful when buying these. A lot of them are defective and get returned to stores. I know, I work at a music store. So make sure that where you buy it has a good return policy.
