I just noticed, on the Akai site, the back pic they have of the 2500 shows a black sticker covering something to the left of the USB jack.

Does anyone know what this was? Did they use a picture of a pre released 2500, and then remove something from the back before the final product?

this picture is probably from a preproduction unit. look at the digital "in/out". this also looks like a sticker.
to see if they intended something at that position you have to open the mpc. maybe there is evidence on the pcb with the usb and the stereo outs. but if the left some function out they most likely also redone the pcb. till someone gets ahold of a preproduction unit we never know.
and yes, there are preproduction and prototype mpc out in the wild like the mpc 3500 for instance.

I wonder what it could have been.. Maybe ADAT out..

That is the only thing I can think of that is around that size.

The 3500 turned into the 5000?

also that picture shows "Akai Pro or Akai Professional" two more times besides the main logo.
I just looked on mine and it ONLY has the main akai logo next to the usb port.

and yeah the 5000 was definitely the 3500 at first.
I was installing leds in my friends 5000 the other day and we noticed that all the pc boards had green paint over all the places that they had previously printed "mpc3500" in white!
