MIDI Omni out - loss of information

Hi all !!

After loads of search on the web, I couldn't find any answer and think my MPC 2500 has some midi problems, so here I post. Sorry if this has already been discussed, but I could'nt find it on the forum.

Here is the explanation:

I have two midi devices connected to MIDI out A & B. I use a soft sequencer to play 2 tracks. One device is set on MIDI channel 14, the other one on channel 16. When the MPC MIDI config is set to "Soft thru | OMNI ALL", my devices weirderly respond to the MIDI messages sent by the MPC:

it's as if the note off messages of channel 14 were lost (so i get stuck notes on my device) and these "lost" note off message were intercepted by my device set on channel 16...Then on channel 16 a 1/8th note is played as a 1/16th.

This only happens if note on / off messages of the two channel arrive for the same note (channel 16 E3 note on arrives before channel 14 E3 note off message was played). If both channels note on / off messages do not "cross" themselves, then there is no problem !

I tried a factory reset and it didn't change anything.

What is really weird is that with the same sequence programmed in the MPC, with "soft thru: AS TRACK" parameter, and both MIDI channel set in the main sequence window, no note on / off message mess occur....

And I'm sure this come from the MPC because if I chain my devices directly from the software sequencer output, there is no problem ! Is there an option I missed ? Do that seem to be my MPC acting not properly ?

this is a strange problem, i have to try this to see if i can reproduce that issue.

but one question: why on earth do you use a soft sequencer for midi devices when you have a mpc?

Thanks for the reply. I'd love to know if it's a personal mpc issue or a hidden bug....

I do use a soft seq during production as I got way faster on my computer (working with Linux) than on the MPC. Maybe just because I'm not used to midi edition on the MPC.

But I think MPC is the best live hardware sequencer I use on stage.

Oh, and btw, I have the same MIDI issue with jj os xl (free version).

This shit doesn't happen with a mpc 2000 xl set as soft thru | OMNI AB........So that comes from the mpc 2500....

Can anybody try to reproduce the problem ?

sorry, it took some time...

after reading your initial post again - maybe the problem is in omni mode that you have two devices on midi 14 A and on 16 B, but you only send midi 14 and 16 to omni from your sequencer, so in one case the midi is split exactly "as track" and in the other case it is doubled to both channels and so there are two messages on each channel in one timeframe even if they are not needed in that channel... the message for 16 B is also sent to the A channel and vice versa and since the events should be at the same spot in time they overlap - makes sense?

why the mpc2000xl is acting different to the mpc2500 is another story that i cannot reproduce at the moment because i have no 2000xl.

No problem for the delay...it's very kind to keep interest to my problem (sadly, you're the only one).

Have you tried to reproduce my problem ? Your explanation doesn't make sense to me (but I might be wrong) because in the omni out mode the mpc should exactly replicate at the output what it gets at the input. So even if all channel infos are transmitted thru all midi outs, my synths being set up to listen to only one channel, they should only respond to the messages carried on their listened channel.

Moreover, even if the note off / note on messages appear at the exact same time, these messages should still keep their midi channel info...That's why I think my MPC has a problem (but what is it, I can't know).

If you don't mind, I could send you the midi sequence I used, so that you can test it with your setup !
