here´s what the manual says:

Inputs/Outputs
Record input (L and R) 1/4-inch stereo phone x 2, balanced -40dBu, input impedance 11k ohms;
Max. Input level +10dBu
Digital input RCA-pin x 1 S/PDIF
Stereo output (L and R) 1/4-inch phone x 2 balanced +11dBu, output impedance 1k Ohms,
Max. output level +22dBu
8 individual outputs 1/4-inch phone x 8 balanced +11dBu, output impedance 1k Ohms,
Max. output level +22dBu

seems like the inputs and outputs (including the 8 individual outs) are all balanced. so every plug should be a 1/4" TRS (aka "stereo") phone. confusingly only the analog record inputs are described as taking stereo phone plugs.

any insights?

The stereo phone plug is balanced (TRS). I think it is poor wording in the specs. The Akai site reads this way:

Analog Input/Output:

(2) Balanced 1/4" Inputs
(10) Balanced 1/4" Outputs [Stereo L/R + 8 Assignable Outs]
(1) Headphone Output

No problem. I had just looked that up right before I read your post. I was ordering a bunch of cables from monoprice.com so I ordered TRS because my mixer has balanced inputs like the 2500.

ive just stumbled on the SERVICE manual and it lists all outputs on the 2500 as UNbalanced.. which is completely opposite to what it says on their website specs.

now im confused and as i just purchased a 8xTRS snake for balanced connections.

although while it says unbalanced in the service manual specs - the circuit diagrams do look to make use of all 3 connections - tip ring and sleeve... so im thinkin its just a typo but if someone with better understanding of circuit diagrams could confirm unbalanced or balanced that would be awesome.
