Just changed my jog wheel rotary encoder and opened up the old one,
some pics from inside the rotary encoder housing, heavy used one

it's only a piece of metal that's responsible for the (mechanical) clicks,

the white plastic part has this metal part with pins sliding over the contacts

all in all it's as cheap inside as outside,
u see some smeary dirt this is because i was putting in a drop of oil someday (don't do it) to make the movement smoother (it was already acting strange at this time)

an idea is to open the housing and reduce the pressure of the metal piece grinding on the white piece
to make it smoother and less noisy, or find another way to raster the steps

unfotunately i soldered in the new one and then opened up the old one to see how simple

by the way it's possible to open and close the housing of the encoder without destroying it (only outside the mpc)

If mine ever goes bad, I'm modding that metal clip. The Titty will def be smaller so the plastic ring teeth will catch less.

maybe you don't even need the metal clip, but then it might possibly acting strange?

i think you need to feel the steps, as you would always have to look on the screen
if you change values.

yea, modding the metal clip is worth to try it. and you always have the metal clip in your old wheel if something geos wrong.

So, if metal clipis removed does the whl still accurately pick up the data correctly just w/o the clicks? Say it aint so!

yes funny idea, noiseless data wheel, finally. think of all the roommates..

it'll work, but you will give up the correct feeling for the steps and thats crap for fast workflow

better is, like sad before, to manipulate the metal clip or try another way to raster the steps smoother.

but the orginal piece is really to stiff for 360° moves with one finger.

I wouldn't say Alps suck but they are kinda in the middle qualitywise. About around the same as C&K, then you've got people like Penny & Giles above and loads of generic stuff which is far worse.


Only picture I could find of the encoder (still not had a chance to have my unit apart) is from the picture of the whole board on MPCStuff and it looks very much like this Alps, except for some reason the terminals are off centre.

Oh and a encoder doesn't use a potentiometer as such.


But if it gets worse with more material there to scroll though I doubt it's the potentiometer that's at fault itself. I have noticed it has been designed to be velocity sensitive, so if you rotate it faster it scrolls faster, rather than one click always being one move (or did I imagine that with the quick play I've had?) so it's also possible they've encoded some handling for different speeds depending on amount of what is being scrolled through.

dude ive so come to realize the more you try to scroll through the harder it gets on the "machine" its self,,meaning..if i have 12 samples on my card and no sub-folders,i can scroll with all kinds of speed,,but when i dump a gig or more on it with subfolders and all,thats when if starts acting sluggish,,so i am actually thinking its not the encoder at all but the way the "os" is set up..not to sure but i'll keep lookin and thanx again man..


Yupp there is some lag in the os. Another case is when you're trimming a long sample compared to a short one.

So Ive got a 2500 on the way and am already considering a mod to the encoder to silence it. From what I can gather from these pics is the noise happens when the piece of metal is pinched and released as the detent passes over it.

Once I have got mine and a spare encoder I am gonna try this.. But I thought I'd throw it out in case someone has an old opened up encoder to test it on:

1 trim the "wings" on the piece of metal to be about 1/3rd as long
2 stuff some trimmed rubber in the void behind it to hold it tightly in place. Something hard but with a bit of bounce. Maybe a piece of eraser?

That way the metal will still lock into the plastic will give the feel of clicks but should be a soft rubbery feeling?

Thanks for the inputs on that shitty data wheel.

I ve just desolder the encoder on my 2k5 (I got it second hand, was one of the first series). Needless to say that the data wheel was half dead.

I took some pictures. They are more neat than oLsen ones so I decided to upload them for those who are still interested in this topic.

The advice I could give too is that we should not put lubricants that doesn t evaporate and let shit behind them.

:lol: The only data wheel I've used on an mpc worth a damn is the 3000. I love my 4000, but that shits wobbly. I never had a problem with the 2500 or 2000xl....I mean, it is what it is!

Concerning Akai gear I touched or owned, it s not an MPC but I really like the feel of the DPS16 data wheel. Otherwise except the 2500 everything else is relatively fine :) I guess the 4k data wheel is not too far from the 1K data wheel no?

I think they put some kind of oil inside when they make it. I guess the reason why it's getting crappy is because it collects dust too easily. Otherwise I think the mechanical part that makes the "click" inside the encoder is too big but it is here to hide the overall cheap quality.

I took it apart, put everything back together and I shot a quick video (forgive the bad quality) :


At high speed it's pretty noisy and still wobbles, a bit hard when there's a sudden direction change. At very low or low speed it can be very sensitive and smooth (not really shown in the video) It's super fast (maybe a little too fast) in menus or submenus with lists (e.g. LOAD MODE)

Of course no miracles but I think it can be worth doing this mod. It makes the data wheel behavior slightly similar to the mpc1000 to a certain extent. ( I know a lot of people hate the 1K wheel). Being a 1K user since 2006 I prefer the 2k5 data wheel this way.

By the way I did this mod yesterday, so please take into account that I have no distance with it. I don't know if it will start to act funny on the short, mid or long run. I ll post another feedback later.

yes the mpc 2000 had a good wheel and the 500 is ok and the 2500 is not bad i love my new 2500 got it today :smoker:
