yeah i just did, thanks for the tip. Cant figure out how to get the synth to play across multiple midi channels so i have a different sound on each midid channel.

i am right in thinking i should be able to assign a different sound from the module to each o the 16 midid channels?

What keyboard is it?

You need to look in the manual to read up on multitimbral setup.

Afraid i can't really help apart from that as it will be different for each module.

Its a yamaha DX7, old school. I will figure it ot, paitience is not my strong point, hence all the questions, reading dosnt tend to make much sense to me I prefer to be shown and have it explained.

But i definatly need to read the friggin manual for the synth, nt sure i can be arsed, but at least its giving me an insight into using the MP with a sound module and thas all i wanted.

thanks for the help, look forward to another instalment of stupid questions comng soon.

Read up on MIDI basics.

You state you are struggling using your keyboard as a sound module. That doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

this should get you started

from the wiki...

Sound Module
*******
Sound module (sometimes referred to as tone generator) is an electronic musical instrument without a human-playable interface such as a keyboard, for example. Sound modules have to be "played" using an externally connected device. The external device may be a controller, which is a device that provides the human-playable interface and may or may not produce sounds of its own, or a sequencer, which is computer hardware or software designed to play electronic musical instruments. Connections between sound modules, controllers, and sequencers are generally made with MIDI, which is a standardized protocol designed for this purpose.

Sound modules may use any number of technologies to produce their sounds. A sound module may be a synthesizer, a sampler, a digital piano, or a rompler.

Drum modules are sound modules which specialize in percussion sounds. Drum modules may be triggered by external trigger pads or pickups as well as through MIDI. Drum modules are distinguished from drum machines through their lack of dedicated on-board triggers and lack of an integrated sequencer.

Sound modules are often rack-mountable, but might also have a table-top form factor.
*******
MIDI
********
Musical Instrument Digital Interface, or MIDI, is an industry-standard electronic communications protocol that defines each musical note in an electronic musical instrument such as a synthesizer, precisely and concisely, allowing electronic musical instruments and computers to exchange data, or "talk", with each other. MIDI does not transmit audio - it simply transmits digital information about a music performance.

a keyboard/synthesiser is a sound module with keys. how do you think it produces the sound???

and i does say that in the manual.

A keyboard can also just be a midi controller. A 'sound module' persay refers to a device that does not have keys (read from wiki above). If it has keys than you would just call it a synth. You need to get a basic understandiing of midi before you are going to get anywhere with your setup. I could tell you exactly what to plug into where but that isn't going to really help you understand what is going on. I do think spirez gave you a good suggestion but the bottom line is you need to figure it out for yourself or you won't have any clue why anything is doing what it is doing.

The MPC is a MIDI SEQUENCER w/ a 16 pad midi controller on it. It can trigger external devices such as a synth or sound module using MIDI. It can also trigger samples stored on its internal memory, also using MIDI. The MPC can record the midi info (sequencing). It can then 'play' back the midi info and trigger sounds to come out of your synths/sound modules or trigger sounds from its internal memory.

I don't see how someone could lay down 2 Gs on a MPC and not know what it does. I guess you heard it was cool so you bought it and now you are about to find out how cool or not cool it really is. You should really find out what the hell it is you are buying before spending money on something (ANYTHING).

By the way. the DX7 is NOT multitimbral (only plays one sound/voice/part at a time) so it will only respond to midi channel 1.

damn tonight must be a really dud night here @ work for me to bother w/ this thread lol. do a few google searches you'll be all set.

Well if it's not multitimbral you could always play your part in via midi, perfect it, then use the direct recording feature to turn it into an audio file.

Then move on to the next track.

Do a search for direct recording in this forum, there's a locked thread with two videos explaining how to use it

Im not quiet sure where this little bit of miss-information in your head came from but you seem to be a fool.

A what point did i claim that i was not aware of what my MPC is or does?

How does asking how to trigger a sound module end up as this in your tiny brain? go see if wiki has the answer to that you numbskull.

thanks again for some tip top help. the module is not multi-timberal so as you have said needs to be recorded yada yada yada.

the funny thing is, i dont even want to use the sound module as a sound module, i just as stated, anted to go through the process of setting it up to see if i liked the way it worked with the MPC.

fool? numbskull? tiny brain? damn dood! cheeeeeee illllll

you stated that you had no clue what it does on your first post....

wristmaster wrote:do i need to connect the output of the keyboard to a mixer to hear the sounds when they are triggered and should the mpc be triggering the sounds?
i am very very new to this so i dont really have a clue how / wahts supposed to happen.

btw, who is this miss information you speak of? some chick who has all the info for you and your new MPC? j/j

I went out of my way to break it down for you 1,2,3 so now go back and read what I wrote and you can learn something and will know I am not the fool on this thread.

not trying to be a jerk, what I wrote b4 could actually really help you out which is what I was trying to do... you only seem worried about my 1 line about buying before knowing and ignore all the generous help.

anyhow, happy sequencing :)
