Unix executable file -- this is a new one...

I've been racking up the bugs today while using the MPC.. one after another...today is the worst i've seen since i got it. Anyway, this is one I haven't seen anyone else experience...

I had a project that I thought I had saved to my projects file in a subfolder of the same name. I went to load another project today and noticed I had the other project in the root of my project folder, soo all the sample, programs, etcc... were clogging up the neat directory list I had. so while I had the system mounted, I decided this would be an easy was to clean it up. so I created a folder with the OS (Mac--I've created folders before w/o a problem) and moved all the files associated with the project into it. I later go in to laod the project on the mpc, but everytime I went to navigate to it, the screen would just show ROOT and none of the subfolders would display. After this happened a couple of times I decided to mount the MPC and maybe move the items out of the folder and re-co it using the MPC. When I mounted the HD, the folder I created was not being shown as a folder. Instead it was being listed as a Unix executable file (the icon was a funcky gey box). I cannot open it in the OS and I cannot open it on the MPC. I essentially lost an entire project. It's there, but somehow was turned into a completely different format that neither my computer or the MPC can read...in fact I just tried to delete it and when I drag it to the trash, it just comes right back.

Sounds like the file got corrupted on OSX somewhere along the line (hence the unix executable). Have you tried adding the correct .*** to the files in question and trying again?


FWIW I have loads of .fxp files which are still recognised as .fxp but the preview item is that of a unix executable.

I made backups of the hard drive before I transferred it over and the original folder that was backed up is listed as a folder in OSX. After it was transferred to the MPC and I tried to read the folder is when the type got screwed up, it just happens that OSX is interpreting it as a Unix executable. It's not a 'file' proper, but is a folder (even though I know folders are files too (I work in IT)), so extensions do not come in to play.

I removed the individual files from the backup folder, placed them in the root of my Projects folder (as they originally were), loaded the project into the MPC and then used the MPC facilities to create a new folder under the project folder and saved the project again. I mounted the MPC and deleted the project files from the root. I was able to get back to work on the project, but now I have that nagging Wrong File error cropping up in my programs now. It's making it hard to work smoothly.

are you on the latest os?

i had this prob with a pc instead of mac. but not since the new os came out.

i think its best to create the folders using the akai rather than fiddling around with them over usb. i only use the usb to backup / restore to the akai. not file organisation.

I have the 1.2OS in a separate folder in my CF Card called "OS". I've never had any problems. I put it to the card from downloading it using a printer with a CF Card reader.

My guess is that everyone is trying to install/load files directly from the computers to the MPC, causing problems. Which leads me to guess there is an inconsistant data transfer problem with the USB and Akai hasn't fixed this. The only thing I transfered directly were sound files which never gave me problems. I have a feeling Akai hasn't properly tested other files.

That's interesting that you got this on a PC (XP and not Linux, right??) I agree, I will not create files/folders in the OS anymore. OSX may be trying to create it as HFS+ or somthing

I had this EXACT problem. It was shitty and I could not find a way around it. In fact, when I mounted my PC, I had hieroglyphics coming up under the directories. What I think happened was I transferred in an MP3 file that corrupted one of my directories...at least that's the only thing I could think of.

But when I went to look at my hard drive, all I could see was root and everything else disappeared. I had to reformat my hard drive and reload everything....

This was on OS 1.1. What OS were you on?

I'm on 1.21 when it happened to me. Like you I ended up doing a reformat so it would stop making my directories disappear. NO more OS folders for me, at least until it happens again to a oflder I create neatively in MPC land...
