accessing the mpc harddisk thru usb

I installed a harddisk and now have a usb connection to the pc. the display says i have do disconnect it, but only when connected to a mac, at least thats what i have understood. i've also read the manual, but i want to know whats ur experiences.
Now do i have to disconnect the mpc like i have to with the cf-card? I mean like everytime i accesss the disk do i have to plug it in and after using it do i have to plug it out? Can i just leave it connected and turn the mpc on and off like without a harddisk/usb connection?

I believe you can leave it plugged in. You just need to "safely remove" it from your PC via that icon in the window tray just like any other USB connection.

I leave mine plugged into my MAC at all times. I just mount and unmount as needed.

k thx. i never removed any usb "safely" i just leave usb-stuff plugged like a tv: u buy it, turn power on and never turn power off unless ur girl is tidying the room... i only power the tv off when it gets trashed damn i hate it when they leave the remote on the top of the tv!

Well, you can corrupt the data and make Windows unstable. When it comes to the hard drive, I would definitely follow procedure.

Here's more information from another forum:

Specific to Windows XP, when you connect a "Plug-and-Play" device like a USB drive or memory stick, you get the icon in your system tray to "Safely remove hardware". This icon is to be clicked in order to stop activity/caching to the device before removal so data isn't corrupted. I don't know about everyone else, but I found this to be a bit of a pain.

Here's what I didn't know (although it says default is optimized for quick removal, I checked anyway just in case):
You can remove the need to perform this step...
• Connect the USB/Firewire device normally
• Open "My Computer" (no jokes about "your computer or my computer")
• Right click on the device in question and select Properties
• Click on the Hardware tab
• In the "All disk drives" list, select the device and click the Properties button
• Under the properties for the device, select the Policies tab (note: if there's no Policies tab, this procedure isn't an option for the device)
• Select the option "Optimize for Quick Removal"

Once this option is set, write caching is disabled and you can remove the device at will, without use of "Safely remove hardware".

kool didnt know that! only thing i already knew was that u better never turn off the power when the write chache is in use. everything was already set to quick removal.
so it should be ok if i leave connected as long as i mount and unmount it what happens as soon as i leave the mode.

I don't understand. What happens in Utility mode when you unmount?

as soon as i return to the main window my usb harddisk connection gets unmounted. sry 4 my bad english...

I work on a mac and I know that i have to unmount by trashing the hardrive. Not exactly sure on the PC though. I do recall that my screen tells me to unmount before going to the main screen though.

yes there is an option to unmount, but when i leave that window it shows me this little "unmount..." message . at the same time my pc closes the usb connection and deletes the mp2500 folder. so i think it gets properly removed.
