You may have heard about this or you may not. If not, this is a real cool tool I found for the MAC.

It's called "File List" and you can drag all your files with more then 16 characters in the name into File List and automatically remove the extra characters so when you import the samples they will work with the MPC naming standards.

File List
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/27090

For Example:

You have a library of 440 drum sounds. Each file name is 24 characters long. The MPC only reads 16 so you need to rename all these files!!! Don't worry. Drag all these files into File List. Choose "Remoce/Insert Characters" and tell it how many characters you need to remove to make the file name no more then 16 characters. Click "Proceed" and voila! 440 files renamed in seconds.

Enjoy!

Hey, how does this work if all of the files I import do not have the same amount of characters. example...
I import 4 files
1. supersnarekikdrumflat33377
2. fatmommakickbuthouse
3. overthehilltomtompanzies66655
4. lalalalkefieoifglligfsjlkjf;lk
If I chose to remove 5 characters from each then some of them will be a little short. I know they will still work and load but I would prefer to keep as many characters as possible to identify the sample/sound.
Is it possible to chose an amount of charcters that all the files will have, like making them all 16 characters???

Will it work for the files:

1. thumpingdrumsnare00001
2. thumpingdrumsnare00002
3. thumpingdrumsnare00003

Wouldn't you just end up with 3 seperate "thumpingdrumsnar" files?

that was going to be another one of my qustions. Does it add sequencial numbers before the extension or something?

It can add sequental data i believe, you have to look through the program and the site. For me, what I used it for was quite helpful...

I was importing Battery Kits, so it removes the characters from LEFT to RIGHT, nnot RIGHT to LEFT (at least this is how it was set up) ie

KitNameSuperLong_DopeSnare1

would become the following if you remove 17 characters

DopeSnare1

The program does a lot of stuff. I only used it once for this application of renaming Battery samples. Anything you discover, please post!
