Workflow advice

I'm new to the 2500 and have a question about workflow for loading kits.

I figured out how to put samples in the AUTOLOAD folder on a memory card, so that the MPC loads all of the sounds in the folder upon bootup.

I went through the 128MB MPC sound library card that came with the MPC, and picked out the sounds I would use (ends up being about 200 drum sounds). So I'm thinking I'll just dump all of these sounds (and a couple of complete kits) into my AUTOLOAD folder on the 1 GB memory card I have. Then, when the MPC loads I'll have all of those sounds at my disposal to make kits from.

The question I have is this: if I have the MPC autoload 300 or so drum sounds upon bootup, will this take up too much memory (I have the 128MB RAM expansion card installed)? I don't want to start losing polyphony or anything when it comes to making sequences/songs. How much RAM would 300 drum sounds take up?

Also, I have an 80 GB hard drive installed. Should I use this for drum sample storage instead?

I'm just new to the MPC and want to figure out the best way to have a good selection of drum sounds that automatically load, and at the same time, have enough RAM to make songs with.

Well, that obviously depends on how large those drum sounds are, right? Put the card into a card reader on your PC and check the size of the folder. You can even see it in the MPC when it is loaded completely. In the Load screen it shows the free sample RAM. You do the rest of the math.

A second thing: Polyphony has nothing to do with sample RAM.

How long is a piece of string?

Just try loading up the 300 drum sounds and see what RAM you have left (it will tell you on the load or save screen I think, unless you are using the JJ OS).

Your polyphony won't be affected by the amount f RAM you use, only by the amount of samples you are actually playing at any one time.

Definately use your hard drive to store samples and songs. I'd suggest have a separate folder for each. As you have 80Gb drive, you probably won't ever need to use your memory card.
