Saving a drum set

I am not able to save a drum set and recall it when I boot the machine. I have samples on the cf card and once I load them I'm not seeing how to save them. I've tried saving as a program but all I see are the preset demos. I thought at one point I was able to replace the demo sounds but when I went to the main page, it hadn't saved. All I want to do is have a drumset to work with.

Yes, I've read the manual 8x trying to figure this out so if I'm to be castigated for posting this, let it be. My experience with Alesis has left me with the impression that this machine takes a much longer route to do the same things.

Once I do get a working drum set to program with, can I audition sounds while the pattern is playing?

To be able to save a program with your samples, you must first create a program with your samples. And to play them, they need to be assigned to the pads.
