Not enough memory to do anything?

Hi everyone. I'm brand new to the MPC world and I just got my MPC 2500 yesterday. It's a basic version that comes with the standard internal RAM and the 32MB card. It's pretty overwhelming trying to learn/get used to a whole new way of working (Im used to DAW's and MIDI controllers) but I'm determined to get off the ground with the MPC because I know it will give me a much better experience in production.

Anyway enough of me, I'm having a problem regarding the limited memory with my MPC. Basically I have loaded a sample that I want to use onto my memory card and gone to use the Chop Shop feature on the MPC. However when I chop the sample and try to save each section individually so I can assign it to its own pad (this is the correct procedure, right?) I get the "insufficient memory!!" message. So i have tried to delete the preset sounds in my internal memory that came with the MPC but I dont think it will let me as there is no option to? So right now I have nothing to work with..... is the only way forward to buy the 128MB RAM expansion??

Other options are being more efficient with samples.
Clear everything when u start with a new project.
Record samples at a higher RPM(or change speed in DAW), speed it down in the mpc
Record or convert to mono
Resample layered samples
Delete the parts of the sample u don't use.

If u work on one beat at the same time u don't have to run out of RAM quickly.

(BTW, Internal memory isn't the same as RAM)

The sample Im using is about 30 seconds long. When I try to extract just one of the sections (after diving into 16) it tells me I have insufficient memory.....which I dont understand because it will let me load the entire 30second sample in but I cant save a 16th of it?? Or am I missing something? I cant delete any of the preset sounds that are in the internal memory.

i'll get slated for this (probably) but please just buy the RAM! there are loads of helpful topics on what RAM to buy, you can get some really cheap off of eBay, and youtube will show you how to install it.

do not buy the Akai RAM!

Haha, yea I'm definitely going to buy the RAM now. I dont mean to sound obnoxious but I think its a bit mad that the MPC doesnt come with enough memory for me to save a tiny amount of my own wav sounds to! lol. Why do you say don't buy the Akai RAM, because of the price? If so, I am bidding for the Akai RAM on ebay but at a very low cost (£5.99 plus £2 p&p!).

when you slice a sample the original remains and a copy is made. You may have been able to get the 30 second sample in there but the edit may have exceeded the limit

Buy any Ram that's compatible with the MPC...I got mine for 3.99 sterling, Ebay is usually a good way to go.

Then do a youtube video on installing Ram into an Mpc. It's so so easy.

Try an record on 45rpm or more an then just tune down (this will save space).

Stick with the mpc, man. It gets totally easy in the end, after 1 month you will know the machine IN AND OUT....

The hard part is making good beats haha.

plus make sure you record in mono when you can i.e drums etc. You can find this in the Record page.

Ah thanks man, I'm defo gonna stick with the MPC, and yea like you said once I get over this initial learning curve I'm sure I'll never look back! Should have my RAM sorted within the week!

32 meg of ram is more than enough to handle a 30 second sample. When you load up the MP are there samples pre loaded?

Hey yea there are quite a few of all the preinstalled sounds but I can't/don't know how to delete them! lol

Liam, go to LOAD, autoload, and turn this off.. this will keep your memory totally empty when you switch the machine on, giving you max recording time...

Dude you're a legend, I didnt realise it was that easy to remove the preset sounds! Thanks! haha. However, I still cant slice my sample. Even though it is only around 30secs long I still get the "insufficient memory" message and when I try slicing it by "auto" it says "sample too big:can't execute". The wav file im sampling from is 6.4MB. Any idea why it's saying its too big? Thanks man.
