Post your views and questions about the Akai MPC2500

I used to rock the MPC2000 and never ran into any problems with the (according to the pdf chart from Akai but we know how reliable that is) 300,000 note sequencer as far as running out of space to do tweaks and everything with MIDI and I'm just wondering if anybody has run into any problems with the 100,000 notes you have available on the MPC2500...With the 4 MIDI outs and alot more synth tweaking I just want to make sure I have enough memory to save my songs. They are usually from 6-8 minutes long and with the 4 MIDI outs I'd like to do alot of tweaking with the 4 synths (Novation A-Station, Access Virus C, Dave Smith Evolver, and Roland JP8000) I'd have it connected to...I'm just curious on how much data does 100,000 notes leave for tweaking...thanks!!

That's an interesting question. But does anybody know to what exactly the 100.000 note limit applies? Is it for each sequence, or for all sequences in total? I guess it's the latter?

2kxl is 300,000 total notes living in the machine.
50,000 max per sequence.

So I'm guessing the 2500 limit is 100,000 total living in the machine.

I guess I am closed-minded since I listen to mostly urban contemporary (did I spell that right :P ) music. But I'd be interested in listening to a song created on an MPC that has 50,000 notes.

No one I know has come close to 50,000 notes per sequence

or

max 300,000 notes in their mpc either.

how would you know if you hit the limit?

i suppose the thing would crash.

I'll never get there so it doesn't even matter, it's not limiting to me if I never reach it anyway, so it doesn't bother me.

I supposed it seeing the Seq Free left

Yes indeed...there is a Free Seq memory display in the Load screen. Improvement suggestion for a future OS: Allow shifting memory from Wave to Seq memory :D

But let's do a little math:

We know the 2500 sequencer has a resolution of max. 96 parts per quarter. Let's assume a track of 6 minutes at a tempo of 120 BPM (that's 120 quarter notes per minute, right?), that would result in 6*120*96=69120 events if you really stuff your sequencer with realtime MIDI CC events. Not including simultaneous events on multiple tracks, nor multiple sequences, it's based on only one event at a time.

So I think it's a valid question if you do a lot of MIDI knob tweaking and recording, though I don't think that someone hit that limit either.

You could make a few sequences however you want, have it repeat in song mode a million times (the mpc might give you an error or something before a million though) then you will have reached the 100,000 sequencer limit and you can see what happens.

thanks for the replies!! I just don't want to do alot of MIDI tweaking with synths and run into a limit on the sequencer part where I can't do all the tweaks and I have to end the song short..

If you run out you can always sample your synth lines or whatever and then it will only take up 1 note.

Gotta love those workarounds.

I've never ever even READ of someone hitting that ceiling of even 50,000 on a 2kxl.

Same here.

I think D&Bguys concern is with MIDI CC messages that he wants to program in his sequences.
