I just finished a new beat and saved it on my new 100g internal seagate HD. I tried to open it a day later and I could only open the .seq files. When I tried to open the .pgm file, I keep getting a message stating "wrong file".
I don't get it, any help anyone.....

A 100g internal Seagate HD is not on the approved/tested list...but I guess it shouldn't matter anyway right ???

Sounds like your file got corrupted which isn't highly unusual or uncommon (according to other members of the forum). Did you save your files in a folder or just saved them to the root of the hard drive?

I sava all my .pgm's and .seq's to a folder of the same name, not to the root directory..
I actually purchased this seagate after finding it as a tested HD for the mpc 1000 on this forum, not on akai's listed site. I was looking for a 100g HD that compusa sold cuz I had a gift certificate and toshiba wasn't available throught them that day, so I connected to the forum from one of their computers and found the one I purchased. Also Seagate is a pretty reputable brand.
However, after installing the hard drive, I dumped a whole bunch of sounds from cd libraries to the HD from my computer and a whole bunch of them have names longer than 16 characters. Do you think this is causing any problems?

Personally, if a company gives me a list of approved drives...that is this list I would use no matter what I read in these forums. That is just me. However, it is most likely not the issue (I think).

Now, I have heard of files getting corrupted moving them from a PC to the 2500 from time to time. However, the reason for some of these problems were incompatible files..such as wrong sample rate, wrong file format, etc. Now do you know how many characters in a name the 2500 supports? If it doesn't support more than 16 characters in a name and you try to load this file....what do you think could happen?

I hear ya about the HD issue and not going with the akai suggested ones. I only chose to go with seagate based on their reputation and that I could not find anything that would lead me to believe that it would not work. Also, akai doesn't list a 100gb option..
Anyways, I think that the mpc supports only 16 character file names but after I imported these files onto my hard drive, the mpc allowed me to open them up and use them, it just abrieviated the names on the mpc screen. These same files still come up at their full length when I dock usb to my MAC (dual 1 gb G4).
When I get home I'm going to try to shorten the file names from my computer and then try to re open the .pgms...
I guess my real question is , what are the things that could be wrong when "wrong file" appears on the screen? Is this just a corrupted file issue?

I am not sure technically what happens. But I have encountered this infrequently before. Corupt files, files in the wrong format..are reasons to get the 'wrong file' problem.

If you got this after you transferred a sample over USB..try saving the original file located on your PC to a flash card (or CD if you have the CDM25 installed). Then loading it into the 2500 to see if you get the same error.

Well, I got back home and looked at this beat completely.
No samples or sounds file names were longer than 16 characters already( I was buggin), the sequences will all load. All of the samples will play if you highlight them in LOAD mode then press play(F5). All I'm tryin to do is load the program and I get this "Wrong file" Message.
Oh, all the sounds I loaded for this beat are .WAV and came from a bunch of Sony sound librarys that I loaded right off my computer to the HD in their own named folders. Also, if I dock back to my G4, open the MPC 2500 HD on my desktop then open the folder where the program, sounds and sequences are, they are all there. Nothin looks out of the ordinary and I can't figure it. Maybe I just gotta wait till Monday and call tech support and see if there is any way to recover this .pgm file. Ahhhhh
Thanks for the suggestions Jahrome, but can you think of why a 100gb HD would have problems with an MPC 2500? I would have just thought it was some politic nonsense and liability issues that would keep Akai from suggesting them or certain ones. I couldn't find anything negative about this anywhere else first and this particular drive was right off the MPC 1000 forum recently

Are you sure they're not 24-bit wavs?

I really don't know if a 100GB HD will cause problems with the 2500. It may work just fine as some say it does with the 1000. But I only put approved extras in my MPC. Akai memory and CD-R drive, and approved Toshiba HD.

ok

Episode,
Would a 24 bit .wav NOT load at all anyway? ya know, when I load the sound the first time I was making the beat before I saved it. Will the 2500 allow me to open up a 24 bit sample but have trouble savin it?
Appreciate the help..

Well one thing all drives in a given line of different sizes are the same, but that's a another story.
Here's what I would ask; you say you MPC allowed you to open them up and use them.
OK, but did you ever load them after that?
The files you loaded would not be the same files the MPC used because of the trunacation.
If you did not save the new program with the new files from the MPC then the files it is looking for probably don't exist.
In other words you see KICK DRUM 01 on the disk but the MPC is actually looking for KICK~D01, so the actual file it's looking for is missing.

well, I was actually asking Episode if the MPC would even allow me to open up a 24bit .wav, cuz I didn't think it would, but in all actuality I believe the sounds that I had loaded were all 16 bit.
Basically as I wrote before, I can load up all the sounds by themselves now without a problem and I can also load up all the sequences with no problems. When I try to load up this specific .pgm file (program only or with samples), I get a message saying "Wrong file!!" and then it won't load.

Anyhoot, since this whole mess started ive since returned the hard drive and ordered a recomended 80gig hitachi. I also copied the corupt .pgm file to a CF as a backup in case someone can help me figure it out. Does someone make an Apple program to build .pgms for the 2500 or is there a place I can send this beat to have someone recover it? I don't want to lose it if possible....

Just know that the 'wrong file' error is not unheard of. I have encountered this before and couldn't figure out why. I just had to recreate the program. My advice...back up...back up....and back up important files.

this has happened to me once, but when I did the exact same steps again, it didnt.

I know one thing, anyone who can do a step by step and can get this to consistently happen every time and submit it to Akai will be a hero. "sometimes I do this and sometimes it crashes" will generally make developers roll their eyes at you.
