So I have my son doing his evening audio production homework using the MPC 2500 with the JJ OS. He keeps telling me something is wrong when he tried to use the song mode. I told him it was probably just operator error. After a few minutes of hearing him complain, I go check it out myself. I tried to convert a song to a long sequence. It crashed. When I tried to go to some other MENUs, it kept crashing and restarting. I tried reformatting the drive...re-initialize the MPC. Nothing worked. Next, I go into the program menu and things start changing randomly. I start to panic. I quickly installed the Akai OS 1.22. It was still crashing. So I reformatted the hard drive and re-initialized it again. All seems well now. But I am/was scared.

For now, that JJ OS is staying far away from my MPC 2500. I had an open mind at first. But now, I will let you guys be the guinea pigs and jump on board another time.

For you fellas that are adventurous...please check out how the song mode works for you. Trying creating a song from several sequences, and then convert this song into a long sequence. Let me know what you find.

makes me glad that i didn't install the JJ OS.

i really don't like the fact that they took the 1000 OS which they had added features to trying to make it more like the 2500, and now they're modifying that to work with the 2500. i don't care if the machines have the same processor, they have different hardware, and so their OS's were programmed slightly different because of that. the post where someone couldn't figure out how to adjust the screen contrast is an example of that.

this OS is full of bandaids and some are bound to tear.

all i need is the current akai OS with MTC fixed, i'd like to have the 2000xl style data wheel movement where the more you spin it, the quicker end points move, the ability to burn data to cd's, the ability to record notes while in the main screen by just holding overdub and hitting a pad, conversion of stereo to mono, and i think it'd be convenient if the slider could be used to simulate scratching so you could use your actual kick sound instead of recording yourself scratching an open kick from vinyl along with the sequence.

i don't need a fancier grid edit (i'm a 2000xl user, step edit is where it's at), i don't need a screen saver, and i don't need pong.

i'm not saying that i'll never try the JJ OS, maybe if it becomes stable enough and has some features i want to try without being too cluttered or if they start over from akai's 2500 OS, i'll try it, but right now, i'm just not convinced that it's worth it.

That settles it for me. I paid to much money for my MPC to install some janky OS that who knows what effects it's having on the hardware inside the MPC. I'm just fine with the way my MPC performs. if akai wants to release an OS with more features......great, if not oh well won't bother me one bit.

I can see it now; in a few weeks guys will be complaining " sections of my LCD aren't working". Try going to JJ when you need repairs on your MPC from damage done by their free OS.

Thanks, but no thanks.

Yall got jokes

But for real..I thought my MPC had fried.

My son had created several sequences and turned them into a 98 bar song using song mode. I tried to convert this song into a single sequence and that's when all hell broke loose. I think JJ added a special code to just fluk wit me

My hard drive (I think) didn't come into play at all. My MPC just kept shutting down and resetting.

King_Vitamin, if you don't have a problem....my all means, please keep using it and keep everybody informed. Its winter time and I need to actually use my MPC more than just trouble shooting an OS.

Of course he's going to use his 1000 code. Why wouldn't he? It would probably take months to re-program all the features he put in the 1000 from scratch. Professional coders re-use code all the time. It makes much more sense to start with the 1000 OS and then adjust it to work with the extra hardware that the 2500 has.

jahrome - have you submitted this colossal bug to JJ ?

No, I haven't submitted this bug because they keep an eye on the forums and I am pretty sure Antonym has been keeping tabs.

Even when I reinstalled the Akai OS, my MPC was acting flaky...but I'm odd enough that I may attempt to re-install the JJ OS to see if I can reproduce the bug again since it appears no one else has come across that problem.

no, actually it makes more sense to start with the 2500 OS and just copy/paste the new features he added to the 1000 from scratch into it. the 2500 was fully functional, and from what i've read a lot of the functions the 2500 was capable of have been crippled due to the fact that the 1000 doesn't have the same hardware and JJ having to program that from scratch.

I couldn't disagree more. The JJ 1000 OS is so different to the Akai OS it would take WAY longer to port over all the new stuff than it would to simply alter the existing code to use a few extra audio and midi outputs. JJ himself obviously chose this route because it was simpler for him, but I guess you know better huh ;)
