only members can view the "more pics" section of myspace. that's why it's asking for a password.

It's a mixer. I don't think there are any audio interface / control surfaces that have that many faders and no LCD displays.

LateArrival101 wrote:i mean...if u're using a computer...how would using a mixer be effective?

could u just get an audio interface with X amount of inputs?
how are regular mixers being used in the studio?

Yes, you could just get an audio interface with a ton of inputs, then mix in the DAW. Some people do that.

Other people take the outputs of their hardware and route that into a mixer, and send just the mixdown to their computer.

Other people take the outputs of their hardware, route that into their computer to record the raw audio tracks, which are spit right back out again and mixed on the mixer.

Still other people combine the techniques. The sampled / sequenced stuff isn't going to change between takes, right? So that gets routed straight into the mixer. But vocals (or whatever gets played live) would get routed into the computer to save takes, then mixed in with the sequenced stuff.

Alternately, the mixer could be used to mixdown just the hardware stuff, which might then get sent to the computer, which does the final mixdown with software synths or whatever, perhaps using plugins for effects.

There's a ton of ways to get the job done.

i use the desk as a kind of drawing board, everything goes in to it, i can use all my FX and Compressors on every single bit of hardware and route it even further if i have to. but is use the computer as an "extra" in my setup.. just to edit some, rip some, and do a lot of things that PC's are know to do faster. i even surf the web on it! anyway, the pc got a terratec phase 28 and it only has 1 stereo in (or 2 mono in). so it would get difficult and a bit pricey to hook everything in the pc.. i try not to use the pc that much, cus i'm more productive with knobs and faders. and indeed just like object88 said, use a pc to "Mixdown" the stuff. and use the 8 outs of the pc to perhaps remix, add some VST's and master the whole thing back and forth.

@ subvertbeats -

that's not an audio interface. it's just a usb control surface. 2 different things.

btw, i have that 2400. i use it to control nuendo AND reason. it's even good for Pro Tools.

sparq.

Im prefectly aware of what it is thank you very much, no need to be patronising  (apologies if that wasnt your intention)

Ive been running my own commercial studio facility for several years now, have degrees in CS and Audio Engineering, and build my own compressors, preamps and MIDIbox control surfaces so you dont need to tell me the difference between a control surface and an audio interface, but thanks anyway ;)

I posted that in response to the previous poster.

I interpreted what he wrote

audio interface / control surfaces

as audio interface OR control surfaces

you interpreted the same as audio interface COMBINED WITH control surfaces....

Im always being amused by how things are interpreted differently by differnt people on the net :)

nah, i wasn't trying to patronize you. and you're right about interpretations. everyone has a different viewpoint of what's either said or written. in my case, i interpreted object88's words of: "It's a mixer. I don't think there are any audio interface / control surfaces that have that many faders and no LCD displays" to mean he didn't think there was an audio interface mixer with that many faders. and then when you posted the 2400, i interpreted that as saying: "yes there is, look..."

that's what prompted me to say what i said. and no, i apologize if it came out as if i was trying to patronize you.

it's all good.
