Some of you guys are really trippin. 16 characters or less or rename the files on your PC. Its not a bug..but a limitation. I hope you are not expecting the MPC to do everything for you...at least be patient to let Akai work out the real issues (the ones that prevent you from creating music) first...

And no..I don't work for Akai. We already have enough people to complain about what's missing from the MPC so there is no reason for me to jump on that bandwagon. I will be the cat the uses the work around until Akai releases another OS.

So now that everyone knows the file name limitation...now what? As far as the previous MPCs...there are also limitations in this regard. Since I don't own anymore of the older MPCs, I can't comment on specifics...but everyone is free to chime in on how the older MPCs to a better job is this area.

As far as MIDI files...yes, they do only have 16 tracks. It was just my lame attempt to show the extremes of what people ask for or complain about.

you're being stubborn.

I'll give another example.

1) Take exact same scenario but with filenames on a PC a few years ago with DOS 8.3 filename restrictions (8 character name, 3 character extension).

If DOS was pointed at a FAT disk with some text files with longer filenames, would this be acceptable behaviour for you:

- it lets you open the text files
- doesnt warn you that there may be a problem
- multiple copies of it start appearing all over the place
- your cut and paste operations go screwy.
- potential data loss

Acceptable to you ??

Not a bug, just a 'limitation' right ??

BTW, my day job is as a product manager for a very large s/w development organisation. I get requests submitted through support daily that I have to make a call on whether those requests are bugs or enhancement requests.
This this is so far away from an enhancement request its not even funny.

If you are correct in this quote:

Jahrome wrote:The 2500 handles samples whose file names are 16 characters or less. Akai clearly states this.

(And I am yet to find where Akai CLEARLY' state this)

Then the limitation is that it doesnt let you load samples with filenames longer than 16 characters.

If it does, and things go screwy then that is a BUG.

And please don't ssume that Im some kind of idiot who will let this stop them working, of course not.
You talk about a workaround; I was already working around it way before I posted this thread.

Now let me go find that stash of microdots I was munching on earlier.
Im so clearly smashed out of my face on hallucionogens here, all of what I write is obviously worthless.

BTW

Only place 16 characters is referenced is in the 1.1. manual addendum here, and is not relevant:

MPC Manual Addendum 1.1 wrote:2. Support for 2000XL long file names

Added the ability to read 16 character names of samples from the MPC
2000XL.

NOTE: due to a limitation in the MPC 2000XL file format, 16 character MPC
2000XL names are only supported from CF cards made using MPC2000XL
MCD.
