SAVING

I tried recording it through garage band, and it seems to do the trick, but it saves it as some weird garage band file. Any idea how to convert that to a regular mp3?

Just use Audacity to record...

It's ridiculously inconvenient to have to resave programs every time you make a song. What if You're using like 8 programs with all 64 pads assigned, but you only use each prgoram for 2 sounds? It just seems like a waste of space and time to save the entire program again for just a couple of sounds? I was thinking maybe I should use the program to record it, then pan over to a new program in that track and reassign the sample? That way you have a fresh program..This sound like a good idea? I'm trying to work it out in my head but i'm nowhere near my Mpc to see if it works.

^^^ If your only using each program for 2 sounds, I would just start from scratch and create a new program with the sounds you want.

freddy - remember that you likely have a 40+ gigabyte storage drive in your mpc.
saving a program over again (even a program with all 64 pads assigned to samples!) isn't going to run you out of space anytime soon.

i have a big folder full of instrument programs on my mpc, and i'll load them individually per song i'm working on and then save the pgm and the samples (20 mb apiece) with my song. there may be 7 copies of the same program (different params) and the same samples (different start/end/loop points) floating around my hard drive at the same time, but since space is so cheap it's no big deal

Yeah I don't have the big hardrive, I'm just relying on the compact flash for now.

I guess that was the original idea of saving Programs and Sequences in separate files. Open a fresh Sequence file, and load your Programs and Samples from another central folder. Too bad the file system implementation on the new MPCs is too sloppy to use it efficiently.
