scoring to picture i don't consider pre-prod.

adding stuff to an almost finished track on a film or album, i don't think that's pre-prod.

good point. i wasn't even considering film production. soundtrack work would be post-production in terms of a film.

and since i'm doing almost exclusivley film music these days, the MPC serves in that workflow. Well, it served even if couldn't sync properly, but with the JJ OS it's finally syncing right.

I am still trying to figure out what feature of the MPC 2500 makes it a valuable tool in Post-production. Its sampler? Its MIDI functions? It's state-of-the-art sonic superiority? What?

Exactly what I thought.....

There are numerous tools you can use for post-procution work. But a drum machine/sequencer like an MPC? I can see George Lucas now......beating on an MPC

Sorry to drop in on your discussion but i've had a problem with all
the previous Akai OS-versions and with the ¨brand-new¨JJ OS too.

I can get the MPC2500 synced with midi clock and get the AKAI synced
with MTC under the ¨infamous¨JJ OS :D
but when i record into my Logic Pro the timing of the recorded audio is never exactly correct.( the starting point of the audio is wobbly and the
audio within the recorded sequence seems to be wobbly also.)

I've also recorded the audio from the MPC into my Logic Pro without any syncing and noticed that i'll get timing differences within the sequence
itself too IF i'm recording from the MPC using Midi clock or MTC.... it's like the ¨groove¨ has vanished or diminished. When just recording without any sync and manually lining my audio up in my Logic Pro it works but it is very time consuming to always line them up.

!! HERE'S THE QUESTION !!
Is it possible to record from your MPC2500 without
having to manually move all your audio later?
Can i get a rock-steady sync from my MPC2500
when recording the audio into my Macbook?
(ok, that was two questions)

Am i crazy or what?

Almost forgot, my gear what i use for this:

Akai MPC2 500
Intel MacBook Mac OS 10.4.8
Running Logic Pro 7.2
Audio interface: Motu 828
Midi interface: Edirol UM-2EX

And the other Studio:

Akai MPC 2500
Emac G4 runnin' Mac OS 9.2
and Logic Platinum 5
Audio interface: Motu 828
Midi interface: Midex 8

...and i allways record in using SPDIF.

Hmmmm...

Maybe it has to do with the clocking/snyc of the digital audio gear in your set-up....or maybe even the latency/buffer settings of your sound card. I am not completely sure..just throwing out possibilities.

Because from a strictly audio perspective, the timing of your audio shouldn't change because you recorded it into Logic.

Also, if you can't get rock-solid sync with the JJ OS...then you really haven't gottem your MPC to sync.

Notice a common factor?
The 828.
I really don't like MOTU interfaces if you are going for sample accurate sync.
The only time I have been able to get consistent lock on various MOTU interfaces was using a DTP.

Thanks for the ideas...
i'll check 'em out...

The midi clock works on 1.1 and 1.22.
and jj OS MTC works also (MPC slave/Logic master)
but it's just when i record the audio in from my MPC 2500
into the Logic Pro the waveform is starting just sliiightly
before it should... i could try to delay my midi-information but the
problem is that this problem is never exactly the same.
There was allways slight variation on the audio when i recorded it in.
Allways a little early.

I didn't use to have this problem when i was runnin' stuff
only in my other studio.( The Emac setup ) Only difference
is that last time i tried to make MPC work in there i had installed Akai OS 1.22. and not 1.1.

On my other studio i'm runnin' this brandnew intel-MacBook
and the problem occurs everytime.

I'll be in touch after i go tomorrow and see if the
old 1.1. would run like it used to with my Emac eventhough i'm
not a believer... The lesson is here.if it wrks, DNT fix it..hehehe

..I should be switching to Apogee (hopefully) soon but i still dnt believe
yet that Motu is the cause of evil in this one. It might be more human related problem y'see...

The problem you are having with the JJ OS is the same with the Akai 1.22 OS. Audio appears to record early...which I can't figure out how/why this happens. I would think it would appear late if anything...

So, you are saying that MTC is not completely fixed with the JJ OS?

Red Ketchup implied that the JJ OS fixed MTC......maybe he should jump in with his sage advice.

man, do you think that by 2015 you will have understood how scoring music to picture works?

if MPC is slave to MIDICLOCK, your groove will not be right. you should slave your MPC with MTC, this will provide the best results.

I think so too, but some guy named Jahrome doesn't think so. Apparently that's how he works. Hours of fun!

So far, with the latest JJ version, i can sync the MPC to MTC without a glitch. (Logic Pro MTC master of MPC)

i don't think you can have sampe accurate sync with external midi devices. i think it's only with softsynths.

Wrong.
It take three elements to have sample accurate sync and that's what MOTU designed the DTP to provide.
They eventually just added the majority of the features of the DTP to the newer MTP and discontinued the DTP.
