Distorted sound in direct record

The sound coming through my speakers is distorted when using the direct record with my keybaord. But when i use the head phones there is no distortion at all. Does anyone know why this would happen?

how is your equipment connected? do you use a mixer? then maybe you hear the sound of the keyboard one time direct through the mixer and the same sound a second time through the mpc (if you have turned monitor to on in record mode).
this doubling can lead to distortion. if you use the effects on the mpc for your direct in source this also can lead to distortion, but should then also be audible while using headphones.

also the type of speakers and headphones in use can be the problem - some headphones can be driven real hard without distortion and some speakers are easy to drive into distortion.

maybe try lowering your master level on the mpc one notch...
