Don't worry too much what should and should not...you decide what you want to have and if the price is right. I would recommend the RAM extension and a harddrive.

the cd-rom is also pretty useful for burning a quick cd of a beat, but i wouldn't spend too much on it.....

Refurbished? If you mean upgraded, you'll find a hard disk in the save screen, max ram in the sample screen (when you press open window) and a cd writer in, er... the cd writer slot on the front.
You could also try asking the owner.

i meant:
Factory Refurbished Policy
What does “factory refurbished” mean?
In general, factory refurbished products are products that wouldn’t otherwise be sold as new, for a variety of reasons. They may have been used in field tests, used in sales displays at trade shows, or returned by a customer. As a result, factory refurbished products may come with minor blemishes.
All factory refurbished products have been cleaned, quality checked and tested. Factory refurbished products are certified at the factory as fully operational, and come with a 90-day parts and labor warranty.

to my knowledge there are no refurbished mpc sold officially from akai/numark.
local dealers, who also sell to the internet occasionally sell mpc which came back whithin the return period, mostly marked as online return items. some sell their sale point display models after some time - these are often no in good shape because thousands of customers touched them.
best guess is to look personally at what you want to buy - if that is not an option, try finding a seller with a resonable offer and good reputation. nothing is for free and if someone offers you a fully maxed out 2500, mint, for only 1000,-$ via western union advanced to the deal, you might better look elsewhere...

^^^^ ah, i see... this is new news to me, so i can not comment on this, BUT since akai never sold refurbished until now that means there are a lot of people returning their product,... WHY???
the offer itself is not that impressive as most online prices are round 1599,- $ for a stock and 1799,- $ for a maxed out if you look good. there was even a free cd drive offer for the us customers for month.

It could also mean that they are planning to abandon the 2500 and are getting rid of the last few units that won't pass as 'new' from the factory...

And why wouldn't they pass as "new" then?

Scratches, dents etc. They would test them thoroughly I assume.
But I am theorising, I have no idea...
