Timestretching and pitching samples

What's up guys. Jus' got my hands on the MPC2500 a few days ago. I've gone through the manual and the additional mpc2500 tutorial on this site. I've pretty much mastered the 16 level technique with pitching instruments, chopping up break beats, but I am completely stumped when it comes to chopping up a sample from a song. I know how to establish a perfect loop of the sample I want to extract but after pitching the sample up/down, chopping it up, and programming the chops on the pads. I can't play the pads at the tempo I set. I know it's something simple I'm overlooking, but I jus' haven't figured it out yet. And, it's beginning to frustrate me ...cause I never had this issue when programming samples in REASON. Someone please assist me with this ... I really want to master the mpc ...I hate being stumped on anything ...or having to ask dumb-ass questions. lol!!!

im not sure if this is on the 2500 but it should be. when you find the perfect loop in the loop screen, hit params (from the trim screen not program screen) and then type in how many beats the loop is and itll give you a bpm readout. put that as your track bpm and then program away.

I did not find a param in the loop screen only in the program screen ... Thanks for your reply though ...

alright well how about set a tempo, and then pitch your samples up/down to fit that tempo. might take a lil bit of experimenting. also maybe try tap tempo, but make sure you put the tap average on 4 which should be in the 'other' screen

funny this comes up, i was just reading this tonight in the 2500 tutorials.

if you can tho try to avoid timestretch itll make ur joint sound robotical depending on how far you stretch so just be careful, i would much rather just use the tune function but sometimes you can go too low or high with that to get the tempo you want. just be careful with timestretch so you dont get the machanical effect inless thats the sound your lookin for.

Yeah I noticed the timestretch makes the sample sound unnatural. So what I decided to do is somethin' a lil different. I pitched the sample,changed the tempo and checked the loop in Recycle then I extracted it, transferred it over to my mpc and chopped it up. I got the results I was lookin' for ...

I'm running Pro Tools, but I'm sure you can do this in any DAW. Get your sample and import it into your DAW. Do all your Time Stretching, EQ, compression, whatever you like to your sample so when you're finished, the only thing left to do with it is dump it in your MPC and chop it up.

Get the tempo in your DAW. In PT, you can use beat detective.

Import your processed loop in your MPC and now you can chop it up and get to creating.

Cool. I use Protools also. Thanks for the advice. I'll try that method out too ...
