HardDrive for my 2500 - how much can it handle?

Hello all.

I´m new here and also a new owner of an Akai MPC 2500 (since Tuesday )).

I had searched in the user manual for some informations how much GB the MPC can handle, but i didn´t found anything. On the akai-pro-homepage there are just recommendations for a few harddisks. I have searched for the 80GB one (HITACHI Travelstar HTS541080G9AT00) in the net and i found a useage-test at http://www.chip.de, there i saw the Samsung SpinPoint M5S HM250JI, which was winning the test.

Now the question: Do you know if the MPC can handle this HD or even it is too much of the goods? Does the 80GB one generally reach for you all?

in the mpc 1000 section there is a stickie with a discussion about harddrives that suit the mpc 1000. the hardware inside the mpc 2500 is very similar to the 1000 so all of the harddrives that are reported positive in that tread should work.
a big harddisk has two major pitfalls: 1. the mpc has only a usb 1.0 connector, so copying several gigabytes of samples from the computer will take a long time (talk hours here!!!). if you want to transfer big amounts of samples better remove the harddisk from the mpc and put it into an usb 2.0 external enclosure for the transfer and then stick it back into the mpc.
2. the max. sample ram is 128mb, so even if you use all ram for all of your projects and always save the whole memory you won´t run out of space easily.

if you install a harddisk be sure to format it inside the mpc with the format function on the utility page - this is to make sure there will be no wrong file error.

i use an 80 gig seagate no problem. i would highly suggest it.
