Please help this frusterated new MPC owner......

Hi all. I've read and re-read the manual and searched the forums regarding saving/recalling a sequence but I'm still having major problems. Here is what I'm doing step by step:

- I find an unused sequence on the machine, say 08.
- MODE - LOAD, I choose a kit from MEMORY CARD, ROOT.....
- I load "WITH SAMPLE," and "replace same samples in memory = NO"
- DO IT (the kit loads)
- MAIN, then I navigate down to "pgm" and have to find the kit with the dial (shouldn't it load automatically? Should I have to scroll to find it?)
- I program a simple beat. BUT for every new track I create I have to 're-dial' the same kit as it defaults to "2500AD." Pain in the ass. Anyway, after I program the beat,
- MODE - SAVE - SAVE TO MEMORY CARD
- under type, I dial "SAVE A SEQUENCE" and the name of my sequence comes up automatiacally under "item." So far so good.
- I hit DO IT. It appears to be saved.
- Re-boot the machine, I go to an unused sequence, MODE, LOAD...... where the hell is it?!?!?!?

I look in every possible file. I even created a new file with my name and try to save everything there, nothing.

What am I doing wrong, folks?

That sounds about right.

You can have more than 1 program loaded into memory. one would think the most recent PGM loaded would be become the default but it doesn't seem to be the case.

When you say "where the hell is it?" do you mean the SEQ or the sounds? Remember, if you reboot and only load up the SEQ that SEQ will be missing the PGM (your kit) assigned to it, so you need to load both the SEQ and PGM. If you mean the actual SEQ file is missing, I'm not sure what to say there.

I'm no expert (a few months into the MPC) but what you're describing sounds pretty much how things have worked for me. I don't think i have to scroll to the correct PGM every time I add a new track, however.

If you're loading with Samples, I'd suggest selecting YES to the "replace same samples in memory". Sounds like you also should be turning your autoload off...(it's in the manual). This will make your MP load up blank, no preset programs or samples, just what you load in after you turn it on. 2500AD is a preset program. Also, here's a super solid way to save. (I don't have my MP in front of me, so the terminology may be a bit different)
1. Go to save screen.
2. Select "Save all programs and samples"
3. Select create new folder and title it. Then hit Do It.
4. Then go to "Save all sequences & songs"
5. Title it accordingly and hit Do It.
This will make your sequence file (SEQ) automatically save in the new folder that you created for your programs and samples (ALL).
6. To ensure it's all saved, before turning off the MP go to the load screen. This will automatically be at the folder you just created (cuz it's the last folder accessed). Now make sure that the folder contains the files you saved. You can look in the folder by pressing the right arrow button. This way there's no surprises for next session.
When you go to load it in next time. Just scroll until you see the name of the folder and hit Do It when the folder is highlighted. This will load all the contents of the folder so that you don't have to load the ALL and SEQ separately.

I did what you said, DJchuck, and everything seems to be working fine! Everything loads as it should and I no longer have a problem finding the files. Before, the sequences were getting saved all over the damn place! I still have much to figure out, but at least I have the basics.
