My harddrive takin a crap??? WAV conversion in Pro Tools!

So I had a bunch of sounds I downloaded that wouldn't play in the MPC. For example, someone posted a nice DJ Quik kit a while back and only about 30% of the sounds actually worked in the MPC. I discovered why yesterday. The other 60% of the sounds were 24bit. This was also the case for nearly 1000 other sounds I downloaded.

So I thought I was slick and tried using Pro Tools to convert the 24 bit sounds to 16 bit by performing a "batch dither" and transfer them back to my harddrive via USB. Well only some of the files went. Every other time, the MPC would freeze, and lock up the computer as well, until I powered down the MPC or pulled the USB chord. Before I even did either of those, I waited nearly a half hour for the MPC to respond, but it wouldn't. I also kept getting an error on the computer screen that the transfer failed due to an I/O error. And the transfer times were REALLY long; like over an hour for 300MB worth of sounds. Also, the MPC was severely slowed due to some faulty files making it onto the MPC harddrive (files that got corrupt during the transfer). One of them wouldn't even delete, no matter how many times I tried, so I had to back up my beats and reformat the hard drive. I had hoped that would solve the issue but it didn't.

So I thought there was a discrepancy with the Pro Tools codec not being compatible with the MPC, since some files did transfer successfully. So I was just gonna delete all the 24 bit sounds from the MPC and leave only the 16's. Well, I decided that before I condem the WAV files, I would try the tranfer on my CF card instead. What do you know, EVERY single file transferred flawlessy to the CF card and worked perfectly. So it turns out that I was slick with the Pro Tools conversion process (which is **** cake BTW). Not only that, but tranfers that were taking nearly an hour with the harddrive only to fail and lock my shit down, was takin mere minutes on the CF card and successfully.

I am using the same USB cord. Tried on two different computers with the harddrive. I don't know what the deally yo! The harddrive seems fine navigating in the MPC, but the transferring sucks all a sudden. What up wit dat?

pro tools tends to write a folder called Digidesign Databases to every drive mounted on the computer and won't let you unmount it unless you close PT. Don't know if that was causing it, but once it happened something similar to me and closing pro tools would stop the hanging on the mpc

Yeah, I know about that. But I always close Pro Tools before transferring and unmounting. Then I delete the database folder. It was the MPC that was lockin the computer up. As soon as I disconnected the mpc from the computer, the computer was fine. This problem is non existant when using CF! It's weird.
