Hey everyone, i bought a HD for my mpc but stupid me i didnt get a 42 pin one or whatever they are i got one thats compatable with the cables. so i went to my computer store and bought a casing for it and turned it into a external hard drive (might as well). My buddy told me he uses a external HD instead of flash cards or installing one into the mpc itself. Now this is where my problem begins. It works fine when i plug it into my computer and i can put files on it and remove them no problem. My question is, to save My files from my mpc to this external hard drive, what do i do? when i plug the external HD into the mpc and select save or load, It doesnt read that the HD is there. it just says save to internal memory or flash. Im getting sort of stumped on this. everyones help is greatly appreciated. Do i have to plug both the mpc and hard drive into my usb ports on the comp and do it from there or? please Help

THANKS

I didn't think that this was possible...and I'm still not convinced it's possible. Seems to me that the HD would need to be formatted in the MPC. If your buddy does this, I'd ask him how.
peace...

What, you want to connect the harddrive to the USB port on the MPC? That's not possible, full stop. The MPC is only a USB client device, not a USB host. So no external devices for you.

Put in an internal drive if you need more space, transfer files between PC and MPC via CF card or by connecting the MPC via USB (that's the only purpose of the USB port).

Took the words right outta my mouth.

Just get yourself a large CF card, or a large 2.5 inch HD. both can be had on newegg.com for cheap.

I got a 8gb cf card for 26 bucks just to AVOID using the USB on the MPC itself. I use the card to transfer files between my PC and the 80GB HD in my mpc. but you can also use the card or a few cards IN PLACE of a HD.

you can also just get a 120gb or 160gb 2.5inch ide HD for like 60 bucks shipped or so.
no biggie.

but look inside your mpc and make sure you have the HD10mdrive tray for the HD first.
if you wanna keep it simple and cheap go with the CF card. although dollar for gig a HD is a WAY better deal.
for ppl that are not so tech savvy its a matter of ease=higher cost versus a little know how equals better value.
do the math .. 26 bucks for a 8gb cf card is like $3.25 PER GB. 60 bucks for a 160GB HD is like 38 cents a GB.
