The stock LCD screen is a bit too bright for dimly lit rooms, causing eye strain. Some people have chosen to replace the entire LCD to get different color backlights, but there might be another way.
It seems pin 21 and 22 supply power to the backlight. JJ says it can't be controlled with software, and I don't know if that's true or not, but it can be disconnected or maybe a resistor added.
Maybe it's possible to disconnect those pins, and attach an on/off or dimmer switch. That way, in the light you can turn it off for the least amount of eye strain, and turn it up a little in the dark.
My 2500 is new, so I'm not eager to disassemble it already, but maybe someone else who replaced their LCD still has the old one to experiment with? It'd be a useful mod if it works.
When I turn off the 2500 there's a brief moment when the backlight is off, but a line on the LCD is on. From what I see, it looks good. It has contrast so is readable, and no distracting bright light.
