Can any one help me figure this out. I have to press the cursor and other buttons over & over to function. how could I tell if I need new buttons or tact switches.

you just have to pop the case off to see if any of the buttons are broken. here's a link to a YouTube video with step-by-step instructions. How To Remove Casing on MPC 2500
