Playing samples from the pads tips?

I have an MPC 2500 and I've been watching videos on how people assign song samples to each pad.

One guy on youtube uses a program to split up a song into small pieces, loads them up to his CF card and assigns each chop to each pad on his MPC.

My first question is, is this the only way to do it? Or is there a faster/convenient way to do it on my MPC 2500?

Second question, how do I switch from "one shot" to "note on" on my MPC? I want to be able to hold down the pad and when I let go the sample will stop playing.

Final question is, what tips do you guys have for chopping up a song?

Chop in the box or outside the box with a computer app, your call homie, it's a personal preference thing.

One Shot/Note On - On JJOS mode + 7. I have no recollection of the Akai OS whatsoever but it's probably the same.

Chop whatever way sounds good to your ears, with a focus on how you will want to freak them when loaded up. For instance have a 1/2 bar - 1 bar chop but also have it broke down into single hits too, so you can work with the sounds anyway you might need.

If you wanna do chops on the PC/Mac get MPC Maid (free) or buy Propellerhead's Recycle.

No foul intended bro, but because info like this is archived all over this site, you probably won't usually get responses on a post like this. All the vets here will feel you should've just used the search function, as the archives already cover the basics and most everything else. The mods and the vets here want to keep the site from getting too cluttered and redundant, which is understandable. Depending on what kind of (JJ)OS you are running, there are several ways to assign samples to the pads when you chop up your sample inside the mpc.

As far as chopping goes.....on the last track I made I chopped a single guitar chord hit into 4 slices....this allowed me to play that chord at different sections of the waveform and gave me a wide variety of expression whereas before I would have sliced it as just one chop.

Another thing I've noticed is that most people want to fill every part of the song with chops....people are constantly hitting the pads. I like to give rest periods and let the track breathe a little especially when laying down chops....this will give you room for other ideas like drum work and maybe synth additions....no need to be constantly hitting the pads all the time as if there is a need to fill every spot with the sample on your pads...at the end of the day the track should sound cohesive but while adding chops I think it's a good Idea to not go overboard all the time.... but don't get me wrong there are times when constant chop playback fits the bill.. ....Just my 2 cents LOL
