If you have a .bin file on your CF card/hard drive, you may be able to load it up from there. (That is - if your CF slot isn't all messed up like you're making it sound...)
I tested this tonight when updating OS-XL. OS bootloader didn't recognize the 3.19 .bin file - even thought it was in the root folder.
I've read that to update
Akai OS you hold the window button when turning the unit on and there should be a file that says 2500.bin (provided you've added it to your CF/hard drive).
Maybe it didn't recognize mine because I was trying to load a JJ OS .bin file - or maybe because the file wasn't named MPC2500.bin or something like that...
I'm not sure. I've never used Akai OS so I've never had to update/reload it.
Either way, I just ended up updating my OS though the Load menu like I always have - just wanted to see if it would work the other way. I didn't play around with it too much though.
Now I doubt any of this will help you - but I just wanted to be more specific I guess.
