What to Upgrade First on MPC2500?

Just got my MPC 2500 (brand new-no upgrades), and haven't even plugged it in yet. Was wondering if I should install upgraded 128mb ram first along with CD/DVD drive and HDD - before I even turn it on, or do I wait till after I upload the JJOS?

Also which JJOS should I get first? Should I just download the free version first or just jump into JJOS2? I don't have an XL screen upgrade.

Install the 128 MB RAM. You will want that right away. Start with JJOS Free, and learn it to death first before you upgrade (this will take 1-2 years depending on how often you lay your hands on it.) You don't need the CD/DVD drive unless you still live in the 20th century. Sample in with your rec in inputs, that's what they are there for. Consider the fat pad upgrade after you learn to use your new goddess. Enjoy

what the previous poster said max out ram cuz you'll need it, cd-rom is pretty useless I've never used it myself and all my 2500's had it...next upgrade would be internal hard disk, max is 120gb.

Thanks for answering my question(s), but no one is fully answering all my questions. I am going to install all these things, however I just need to know is it wise to do so prior to even turning it on for the first time? I should ask it this way, what would you do if you had a brand new MPC 2500 and some extra trimmings to add to it? Obviously I can't install the latest jjos prior to turning on the MPC, so that part I get. But should I go ahead and do all other upgrades first, or hold out - turn it on and play with it first using the Akai os? And if I do set up everything prior to turning it on, when I go to update the JJOS, will it have any negative effects (errors) when it comes time to use all those upgrades? Sorry if I'm coming off wrong or whatnot, I'm just very anal or thorough when it comes to getting things done right the first time around - and I'm excited to get started on production.

it makes no difference at all if you install them first, or run the machine first.

having said that the akai os is not worth wasting your time on.

get the free jj os on there and learn that.

Plug the thing in and try it before you start taking it apart! First make sure everything is working so you can send it back if it's busted.

As for upgrades, I'd say the only requirement for a new MPC would be a decent size CF card and the memory (i.e. because the stock memory is simply not enough to work with). Everything after that is optional and you should see how you are getting on with it so you can assess which upgrades are required for your particular use.

I don't run a hard drive, never felt the need. As for a CD drive, again not for me, I'd never use the thing. I had one already in my 5000, I used it once out of curiosity.

I'd say stick with the Akai OS for a bit and see how it goes. Get a feel for the MPC before you start pimping it.

Places like MPC Stuff have plenty of different mods for you to spend your money on, but I dont see the point until you've spent time using the machine in its default state.

I just keep hearing different things (especially regarding the Akai OS vs JJOSXL) that makes me want to make sure I get the good info. Like I said before - I am very anal and try to be thorough. But Ill do what you suggested and just get busy with the original OS.

i rescind my former suggestion - try the akai os since that is what the manual is written for.
when it starts to piss you off, but you know how to use it, upgrade to jj free.

quit reading stuff and getting advice and just turn the machine on yourself - your first question was 'should i turn the machine on' - you're being too anal. lighten up.

read too many opinions and you will never get one straight answer. you have to just DO IT.
