Whats wrong with my MPC 2500

I just turned my MPC 2500 on and this is the screen I got.



after hitting a few pads it goes back to this



Has anyone seen this before?, any members out there have experience servicing MPC's lol?

Has it ever worked correctly for you before?

It seems to have the MPC2500 test OS installed on it, did you install it, and do you have the .bin file for the test OS?

If you just bought it, maybe it was having problems with the OS flash ROM circuit, maybe it had the test OS installed to try and troubleshoot those problems?

Have you tried installing the latest Akai OS, or JJOS?

A mate was using it prior, big mistake lol.

From that screen how do you load the OS?, dont think the CF drive works.

Could I load the OS from a HD?, I have a MPC 1000 with a hard drive.

Also when it first turns on the screen is at 100% brightness and I have to dial it down?.

Not sure how the test OS got on there, I thought it had to be specifically loaded onto it, and it replaced the normal OS, maybe that is not correct, or maybe your mate was having problems and tried to work out what they were by loading the test OS?

Maybe someone else will correct me, and tell you that you can get back to the normal OS without reloading it, I am not 100% sure.

You load the OS by loading it from the load screen, from an attached storage device, or by holding down the window button when powering it on, which might be only from CF card, and which is probably the only option with the test OS on it.

Alternatively, the test OS might be on a flash ROM installed inside the MPC, but that seems like an expensive possibility...

No, sorry, 3 hours South of you (with way too many MPCs!).

I think I might of even done it, as I said I have to hit shift and the data wheel to bring the screen down brightness wise. The first time I booted it up after getting it back the screen did not come on, but I was able to select the banks and mode button with LEDs working. I missed around with a few buttons while turning the MPC on to see if it would fix the screen, that is when I discovered the screen is always on high brightness straight after booting up.

Now when I boot it up I cannot select the pad banks or other buttons. Tricky lol.

Did you get the 3K locally?, I think I have seen 3 for sale in 10 odd years locally

Seems to be a common fault with OS 1.2...

Try powering up with Windows key held down to see if you can get out of test mode, then update the OS to a newer version.

MPC3000 was originally Australian sold, and no, you don't see many, so no real bargains locally, unfortunately.



Anyone know how to get into test mode without loading the test OS, is it possible?

I tried to boot the MPC while holding the window button and it does not allow me to SHIFT the contrast down lol. So know I have no idea what the screen is, if the screen was busted would it just not work art all?.

Who fixes stuff here in NSW?, there use to be a guy in the mountains that fixes ensoniq stuff.

I think you need to install the update by holding down the Window button while powering up, with a CF card inserted, that has the OS on it.

Someone in that thread said that they pressed F6 at the blank screen, or something like that, which loaded the new OS.

It probably sits there at a prompt, which you can't read due to the incorrect contrast, waiting for a button press in response to the prompt, to confirm that it should go ahead with with the update.

It might be sitting there asking for the OS to be inserted.

Why no operating CF reader?

That is what mine says when I power up with Window button pressed, with no card inserted, and it will not do anything.

Once I insert a CF card with an OS file on it, it shows the name of the OS file, and F6 is a [DO IT] button, as the guy in the thread said.


- copy MPC OS file into root directory of an MPC format, or a FAT16 format, CF card
- sort out a working CF reader for your MPC, if broken
- insert OS CF card into MPC CF reader
- power up MPC with Window button held down, to enter OS Update screen
- press F6/[DO IT] button to start the update
- give it a little time to erase and then write the OS into the MPC OS flash memory
- it should automatically reboot with the new OS
- power up MPC with Erase button held down, to reset MPC to factory defaults (keep it held down until finished booting)
- hopefully you are back in business.

Not sure if it will recognise the OS in the root directory of a HDD or CD/DVD, might be worth a try if your CF reader is not working, but it only mentions the CF reader as an option in the service manual and on my OS Update screen.

I tested the CF reader in that Program edit function. Its a rad function to have if you are buying a second hand unit as it test EVERY single function or button need to know its 100%.

Are the CF readers the same unit in but MPC 1000 or MPC 2500?.

Could I pull the CF reader from a MPC 1000 and use it in the MPC 2500?.

Yes, it lists the test OS functions in the service manual, seems very comprehensive, that is why I am keen to get hold of a copy of the Test OS file, or find a way to access it if built into the Akai OS.

No idea about MPC1000-MPC2500 CF reader compatibility, I would guess that they are similar, they have different part numbers in the service manuals, but they might be compatible.

I though that test program would have been posted here by now?.

When I got the MPC there was a part in the box, having looking at the service manual I now know its the black platsic/metal rail out of the CF reader.

If I cannot put the MPC 1000 CF reader into to MPC 2500 who sells the replacement part and can I get that in Australia?

You would just need to temporarily connect the MPC1000 card reader, if it was compatible, to update the OS.
