Pesky pad problems.

So I recently bought a used 2500.
The previous owner had it for about 6-8 months, and used it for live shows with his band. He didn't really get how to use it so be sold it, to me.

Anyway, I got it and it was all going swell, though I hadn't really used MPCs before, so it's taken me a while to get my head around how to use it properly, and I am now starting to.

Here's where the problem arises.
It started last night when I was renaming some sequences.
Whenever I hit a pad to rename something, eg. PAD 1 to select 'A'. Instead of coming up with A, it would type ACEG. and same with most pads. I would press them really lightly and it would still do this.

I tried changing the pad sensitivity (even though I think it may be hitting all the pads around it when I simply hit one pad) to no avail. And I tried turning it off and on a few times no luck. Went to bed and got up the next day and it was all good. But now it's started up again.

I went back to the pad sensitivity page and tried it again. And interestingly I noticed that when I tried the method (directly from the MPC2500 manual) where you make the sensitivity 1, hit the pad as hard as you want full velocity to be (which to me is really not hard because I don't like bashing the thing around at all) it barely registered.
even when I put the sensitivity all the way up to 16, and hit the pads really hard the velocity was literally getting to about 13, instead of 127. This clicked as to why I had always been using the 'full level' button when playing around with it (because I really don't like hitting the pads hard)


Anyway seems like its pretty obvious my pad sensors are ****.
Has anyone had problems with this?
I presume I'm gonna have to buy some new pad sensors and replace them, do you think that this will be the solution, or could this potentially be a software issue?

Not saying this will work, but try factory resetting it.


01. Turn the MPC2500 on while holding the [ERASE] key.
02. Release the [ERASE] key after the display shows [MPC2500 (##MB installed)].

Now the MPC2500 is reset to the Factory Preset settings.

Yeah a reset sounds worth trying.

Personally I've found the pad sensitivity etc. to be superior on all the JJ OS's, with JJOS-XL offering the biggest noticeable difference and deeper editable parameter's. (Sensitivity settings go up to 25 I believe)

If you're on Akai OS maybe try JJ Free, can't hurt to check it out, and the Global Program Edit alone is worth running JJ Free.

But generally you have to beat an MPC's pads half to death before you need a new sensor sheet.

I had this problem twice with my mpc2500. What I did was cleaning the sensor sheet with a moisty cloth. In case there is any grease or smoke residu make sure you whipe that off. Making sure al the connections are tight in place. Also the one underneath the metal plate on which the sensor sheet is glued on.

Did the trick for me every time.

Unfortunately, factory reset did nada to fix the problem.
I was really hoping I wouldn't have to pull it apart. I hate doing stuff like that.

But perhaps Menco's cleaning the sensor sheet trick would work?

I've looked on the forum briefly just now, into tutorials on pulling the MPC apart and putting it back together. No results that were relevant. I'll try youtube after this, but does anyone have any useful information/tips/reviews/tutorials/etc on doing this kind of thing before I go all handyman on this thing?

I'm gonna pull it apart in a few hours, completely been putting it off but I have to do it.

Does anyone genuinely think that installing JJ would help with this? Because I'm real foggy about the whole idea of it, but if it would help I'm willing to give it a try.

If not, I will proceed! Any last minute advice?

I get you were probably hinting that I should have searched first, but I assure you I did have a look around and I just wanted to make sure that I was getting the answers to my specific problem, though I can see you're a lot better at searching than I so I apologise if this thread frustrated you, or anyone else for that matter.


However! I literally just finished pulling the MPC apart, (or rather, putting it back together) thanks to the help of a youtube video by MPC Stuff (hope you're not rivals) explaining how to change the pads and buttons over.

Anyway, got to look at the sensor sheet, totally sceptical that it would do anything at all because it looked mint clean, but I gave it a good wiping and put her all back together.

And **** me. It worked! Even the pad velocity is working the way it should.

So thank you so incredibly much to everyone who helped me. I am so ridiculously happy that I can go back to producing.

No wasn't my intent because when you search you won't find it so I was giving you the locations of the info.
Those are older threads with odd headings so the search is kinda hit and miss.

I bet you actually changed their alignment and position when you put it back together.
Sad part is it's a re-occurring problem.

Yeah you're not wrong, I put the casing back over the unit and realised that as it sat there the whole pad sheet could move around, so I took it back off and made sure it was aligned perfectly, and that was probs the issue.

You know what, it sucks that its a reoccuring issue but I'm glad it was easily fixable. I just pray that it all stays good and well because I just had the best session on there I've ever had!
