OS read by hard drive???

Im having issues getting off of the os update screen due to me turning off the machine while installing an update. Yes I know I f**ked up . If I put the os on the hard drive will the mpc read it and ask me to do an update?

you can try that, but how do you access the harddrive if your mpc is not booting past the os update screen?
if you remove the hdd and put it in a external case to access it, then do not format it from the computer, because that can lead to trouble later as the mpc only seems to like hdd that are formated with the mpc itself.

to get the mpc see the os update file be sure to unpack it if it was a zip file and put it into the top directory of the hdd, not into a folder!

maybe that will not work, because the load and save screens always defaults to the cf-card and there is no way to switch to the hdd in the os update screen.

but another idea, did you try to reset the mpc at all? press and hold the erase button while powering up the machine and don´t let go until the main screen appears.

also in reply to your other tread: the biggest difference between os 1.23 and os 1.24 is the ability to open chopshop stereo files and to chop samples in stereo - this is the reason why chopshop is so slow on os 1.24! and the reason why so many people talk negatively about 1.24, because they only see that it got slow, but do not realize why.

I've tried to put 1.23 os on the cf but the MPC did not read it. As fas ar the RESET goes, does anything happen when u hold the Erase button (prompt screen) or anything of that nature showing you've successfully RESET the machine?

Now that u mention the part about the hdd I'm completely out of ideas.

using the reset function does unfortunately not show anything to display its success.
it only resets the whole os to standard settings, so if you previously had done any user settings and the are gone after the reset then you know that the machine resetted.
the most obvious should be that the mpc loads the standart autoload again - if you have not overwritten the internal memory with different content in which case all the autoloaded programs should bear questionmarks because the autoload could not find either the factory programs or the assigned samples anywhere. maybe it could also get stuck in that process while trying to find and load the specified content of the autoload folder - but that is speculation as i have not seen that happen myself.

in your case it is difficult, because you did the one thing that you wasn´t supposed to doing while the update was in progress and so you ended up with a corrupted flash rom.

do you have the posibility to try other cf-cards, as the mpc seems to be a bit picky regarding cf-cards that will work for the update process. the only cf-cards that seem to be always working are the stock akai 32mb and 128mb cards that were originally included with the mpc. but other cards can work as well as seen on many occasions and we never figured out why the mpc refuses to use some cards. maybe that is the same reason why the mpc only likes hdd that are formated from within the mpc itself and all that third party cf-cards that worked were also first formated from the mpc.
this issue is a bit strange, because the mpc also formats using the old microsoft fat16 format, but there seems to be a twist to it for reasons we also only could speculate - maybe it is because of a bug or maybe because of a little change they made to the file system in order to avoid payments or copyright issues?

anyways if you find a card that works you should be able to re-flash the os, but if you are stuck then i would suggest to write akai an e-mail about it and ask what to do now.

and one last tip: to force the mpc to load the update booloader press and hold the window button while powering on the unit until the update screen appears.
