Setting up to sample

Wanted to sample vinyl but too expensive.. So I've got a numark mix track quad, an MPC 2500 and my iMac... My question is what else do I need to set this up for sampling or to hook these all up together? I don't need an audio interface because I am fine about using headphones, and I am sure I'll have a lot of other questions once I get setup but for now I just need to know all the cables and so on I'll need to hook up the MPC to the computer/turntables. Thanks.

You don't need a mixer if your using your computer. Records require a Phono Preamp to bring the level up to what is called a Line Level. Sound coming out of your laptop, you might have seen it called Line Out, because it's a Line Level Output. So it does not need to be boosted.

Here's something your going to need to learn. Understanding the IN AND OUT concept. You can use your finger to draw a path. Touching where the sound is coming out of whatever it is you want to sample from, then touch the next peice of gear, being your 2500, and you need the sound going OUT of the computer, IN to the MPC yeah?

So then you look at the jacks. Your laptop has the tiny 'headphone jack' that is called an 1/8" jack. On the rear of your 2500 you'll see the inputs are the big ones, or 'guitar cable sized' those are 1/4" jacks.

So what do you need to do? Go from 1/8" to 1/4" This is especially important when looking for cables.

If you want to sample in stereo you can get a cable called a "Dual RCA to 1/8" which is two RCA jacks on one end, left and right, and the other side is your 1/8" cable.

Obviously RCA jacks won't plug into the MPC as it's 1/4", so you now need RCA to 1/4" adapters.

There is also a 1/8" to DUAL 1/4" cable. Which without adapters, with a single cable, can take sound OUT of the laptop, and IN to the 2500 :nod:

All of this is like the foundation of what your going to defiantly need to know.

Looks like Star's got your back, but a quick note: you don't really even need an interface, even without headphones; you can plug monitors in your MPC outputs anyway.
