S/PDIF

Anyone using s/pdif with their MPCs? I gave it a quick try yesterday, but I couldn't get any signal into my computer. Is there anything special you should think of?

here's a stupid question.... did you connect it to the digital out of the mpc? and connect the other end to the spdif in on your computer?

Of course I have. When I said I just gave it a short try I didn't meant I tried connecting them mentally
No, what I'm fishing after is if there is anything special you need to do before making it work. Such as special synchronization or word clock. I'm completely lost in the coaxial/optical digital world.

There must me something wrong on your computer end of things.

The MPC 2500 will route its stereo outputs thru the SPDIF outs with no additional settings or hastle. Just connect it to your PCs SPDIF (digital input) not an analog RCA jack, which looks exactly the same.

OK. Then it must be wrong somewhere else then.
Maybe the cable.

Good question. With some soundcards you have to bus the spdif outputs (emu patchmikx springs to mind).

Also some soundcards will only allow you to hear spdif through your DAW.

There is no simple answer to the above question I am afraid to say. What soundcard is it that you are using though???

Creamware Scope. But yesterday I changed cables and tried to connect my Proteus 2000 to the digital ins of the MPC2500 - with no problem at all. So it must have been the cable after all. Quite nice actually. Wish more of my equipment had s/pdif.

I was looking at soundcards and was wondering about S/PDIF. What are some advantages? Is is only stereo main out and record in?

on my old maudio, i had to "lock" the spdif and then it would pass the signal from the mpc 2500... maybe something similar?

what's the pros? well, it's the cleanest signal as true to the source as possible... the cons? you have to track everything one at a time... not so bad if you just need to track in a few bars and arrange your song as audio within your daw...

Could you mix s/pdif with individual analog outputs on the certain sound card? Could I run the mpc (a,b) to s/pdif and have c and d going to the other 1/4 inputs of the sound card?

But I think I know what you're saying. It's better use is with multitracking in a daw.

you can run the mpc outs however you wish... thig is, you're working with two different types of signal... for the mpc, i prefer mogami snake...

i run the out of my api preamp via spdif though

and if i was to get a trition rack, i would run the adat out...

all depends on your studio and preference...
