why is their numbers beside the pad name in step edit?

in step edit their is a number assigned to each pad on the mpc ..I m just wondering what that number used for example.......pad A06 will have the number (38) beside it....any idea's?

I guess that's the MIDI note number associated with the Pad. See Manual p. 90.
