Recording Midi Data Automation with my MPC2500

Hi Guys

I want to record Filter Movements from my synthesizer to the MPC.


I got 2 questions.


1) Somebody in the forum wrote that you're able to see the recorded midi data as for example a curve, or line instead of step edit recorded data.

Is this possible with my 2500? Havent found something like That.


2)

Which length do the steps have for recording the incoming midi signal in the time signature.
For example audio 96'000 steps per second. = 96khz

The Filter Movements have to be exact and not to jump with big differences.

1. grid edit shows you something close to that. - [mode] - [PAD15] (Grid edit) to get there.

2. the sequencer is 96 pulses per quarter note.

That means 384 values per note hmm..

The Grid edit mode is not that kind i am looking. Grid Edit is just placing samples or notes.

But automation has something to do with value changes durin a period of time.


What you guys think. The only way would be step edit?

Someone else set up a synth and recording filter movements or other modulations?

if your lookng to graphically edit filter sweeps, then no, theres nothing like that.

it does handle sweeps and lots of midi data like a champ, however.

Im talking about just recording the sweeps in real time.

if i understand correctly, in most gear/software, midi control changes are recorded at a relatively low rate (compared to audio) and it depends partly on your synth architecture to smooth the midi data and prevent filter stepping

thats why people complain about audible filter stepping on some synths...


there are only 128 values for a midi control-change, so if there's no smoothing you might hear stepping just changing from one to the next, anyway

many synths use MSB/LSB so you actually get 16,384 levels and this can smoothen the curve.

As far as I know there is no way to graphically edit CC automation as you could in Cubase or Logic but if you record the filter sweep or any other CC it will play back exactly how you recorded it.

Yea, it's real easy to record control messages in the MPC. You can even dedicate tracks to just message information.

As for stepping, my opinion is that most listeners won't hear any, and work with the tools you have.
