PAD issue, need help/advice PLEASE

I just bought myself an MPC 2500 off ebay from a guy who bought the unit at a bankruptcy auction; so it is brand new, never touched, never opened. I open it up and start getting right into it (I have had a 2000XL for the last 6 years) and find that there are three pads not functioning properly. One pad doesn't work at all, another works most of the time, and the third does this funny thing where when I hold it and then release it it triggers the pad next to it. I called Akai today and I got no warranty cuz I didn't buy from a authorized dealer, the guy who sold the unit to me on ebay said in the auction that he guarantees that it will work... but I saved nearly $1000 so I am wondering if anybody can tell me if I should try and get this thing fixed on my own. Will I still be ahead?? Or should I send it back?? Has anybody ever heard of this pad problem before?? Any help is appreciated.

Could you elaborate just a bit more?? That doesn't really help me too much.

You would have to sort out if it's a hardware problem or not...


You could start by making sure you have the latest OS, some corrupt OS could give unpredictable results like this.


Then, depending on your level of familiarity with electronic stuff, you could just remove the case and the pads and see if there is anything there (like dried up coca cola haha) and/or see how well the actual buttons work without the pads on it...

or you could just go and have it replaced by the guy that sold it on ebay, who has to honor his warantee... that's what soundasleep was saying =P

I installed the new OS and the problem is still there. Luckily the pad that never works is pad 4, it has no mode function. So I guess I'll take it apart, I dropped out of an electronics course and I have no idea what I'm gonna be looking for... somebody stop me.

Just be gentle with it... you know the basic rules, unplug everything, don't force anything, take the time to observe before you move, take notes (what was where)

same shit happend to my mpc bought it new from the dealer.......... had it 5 months ...pad 13 **** up and started triggering pad 14 aswell pad 13 wouldent work sometimes.....sent it in ...akai said it was a broken censor and fixed it..........I should get a new one!!!!!!!!!

Alright, word... that's all I wanted to hear. If its a sensor I'm not too worried. It should be a pretty easy fix if that's the case. Like I said before - I saved nearly a thousand dollars on this thing and the two pads are functioning fine now, but the third one is still not working at all. I think I may just keep it and see what happens, seeing as the one pad doesn't have any other function other than triggering samples... BTW - why the hell did Akai switch the program, mixer, sample, etc to the two button bullshit from the 2000 (mode - program, etc)???? That shit is gay, I liked using one hand in one fluent motion to get around this thing. One of my complaints... also the convert stereo to mono is gone as well, that is also gay. Anyways, thanks alot for your help... I still want to figure out how much a sensor is.

I opened it up, touched the pad with my fingers, and now it works... WTF????? Way to go Akai, keep up the quality craftsmanship.

For future reference, does anybody know how much it costs to change the sensor under the pads?? I got a feeling I may have to do it one day.

got my mpc back today.....the replaced pad sensor would have cost me 125.40 dor the labour and parts ....parts were 60.00 and labour was 65.00 ....I m in canada so I m not sure if the price will very....about to go test my mpc and I ll post up how she works out

65.00 to change pad sensor Thats like one of the easiest things to replace

OK, cool... I'm in Canada too (Edmonton, GO OILERS). $125 sounds alright considering I saved a grand on this thing. But so far so good, only one pad malfunctions sometimes and if I turn the unit off and back on it goes away. So all in all I am still ahead. Thanks again. You got a myspace page???
