Shutting MPC Off With Hard Drive Installed

I've had a hard drive installed in my MPC for a few weeks and now when I save I get this grinding noise. That may not be the best way to describe it cause it's not all that bad, just it never use make that noise before. So now I'm thinking that was caused from shutting my MPC down when the hard drive was still running. Is there a certain way to properly shut off my MPC with the hard drive installed? I never shut it off when saving obviously, but I'm sure I have shut down when the HD was still spinning. Could that be harming the HD?

same here.. like also when you transfer anything to the hard drive and then try to play it.. it makes a noise and then you gotta restart it.. and for some reason when i put any more files on it they wont show up on the loading screen on the mpc.. wtf!.. and it still has alot of memory..how about 73GB left

Their is no, "Proper" way to shut down the 2500..... What I do is after I finish saving I go back to the main screen and wait a few seconds and just shutdown. I've never heard any noise or have had any problems.

I was refering to the first question. As for the static thing...... I believe its a bug. I had the same problem but since I've upgraded, I havent really experienced it.

You know that one of the OS updates had something to do with the USB disconnect device option.

Which meant that on the older version of the OS you couldnt "disconnect your hardware" within windows. And this lead to data transfers being cut off half way through, and disk problems could occur from this.

But the sound of your disks suggest that it took a shock - do you travel with it?
How old is it?
Is it a disk from the recommended list on Akaipro web site?

What shrednar said about going back to the main screen after saving for a few seconds is probably the safest way I heard.

Yes, sounds like it could be mechanical. Notebook disk like these should be quite robust however, even when traveling.

And I second (or third ) what shrednar said, waiting a few moments until the disk spins down after accessing it is the only thing you can do.

I think that's the safest bet.

Unmount the HD before you turn it off.
Currently there is only one way to do this, change to the internal memory before you turn it off.
You will hear the hard drive spin out and stop as you change the source in the load screen.
For those with approved HD's that are now making noise, how is the ventilation where the MPC sits?

I think it does the same if you wait like 10 seconds, but that seems to be the safest way.

Considering there is nothing about such procedures in the manual, it would be sad if that is a serious issue for the disk. But who knows...
