Hitachi 60gb drive warning

Just wanted to give a warning that the Hitachi Travelstar 60gb drive may be unstable or unusable.

Model info:
Hitachi Travelstar
60gb Capacity
Model# HTS548060M9AT00
5400 RPM

This was a drive that I pulled out of an old Powerbook G4 (titanium) and loaded into my MPC2500. It showed up fine, reformatted, and allowed me to start saving to it. A day or two later the drive can't be seen by the MPC. No loading, saving, or reformatting. I checked the connection and reseated the drive but it still won't show up at all. This could have just been an old drive with previous problems, but I thought I'd give a heads-up to anyone who might want to try it out.

Guess I'll be picking up an 80gb AKAI certified one asap.

i've got a 100gb travelstar and haven't had any issues, then again, i bought mine brand new... didn't take it out of a powerbook.

By the way a tech at Best Buys Geek Squad told me that the new Hitachi Travelstars are the way to go as far as laptop HD's they are the most reliable. He went on to say that they were not the best a few years ago,but they have really upped their standards in quality since then.

...Just thought I would share that...

Its bit of a broad statement to say that all of these disks are not working. especially when you have had it installed for a while in a MAC and then transfered it to the MPC.

but then saying that you should always go for the recommendations from akai.

so the first statement negates the 1st - why do i even bother typing this stuff.

Upright, I wouldn't consider the Geek Squad @ Best Buy "techs" at all. They have no certifications, or they'd be working in an I.T. field instead. These geeks read a few online reviews (which are biased at best), and present no facts at all. Also, they recommend the Travelstars because it's the most expensive hard drives that they have in stock, giving the "tech" (aka sales person) more of a comission for the sale. I avoid those people like the plague, whenever I shop there. Within 10 seconds (whatever isle you're browsing down), they swarm you like flies to a pile of $hit, because they want you to spend more money to add to their commission. I usually carry one of those battery powered fly swatters that zap 'em if they come 5 feet near me. The smartest thing you can do is your own research in order to get what you need without spending money you shouldnt have to. I bought a Seagate Momentus 80gb HD with a 5 year warranty for far less than I would've spent on an overpriced Hitachi. I'm not disssing you for your purchase.... just trying to let you know the score when it comes to retail chains and comission-hungry sales people.

seriously, i went to bestbuy and compusa one day looking for harddrive jumpers so that i could set the scsi id on a compact flash drive i had bought for my mpc2000xl. they had no idea what i was talking about. i ended up goin to radio shack, the guy there knew what it was right away and i was in and out of there in less than a minute.
