Why can't I hear more than one track play back at a time?

Hi all. I've been producing a long time. owned quite a few MPC's over the years. But for some reason the 2500 has stumped me...

Let's say I record track 1, drumkit x. Cool. Plays back fine.

Now let's say I record track 2, drum kit y. When I hit overdub I can not hear track 1 playing back..?

In fact, once I select track 2, track 1 doesn't play back at ALL. In fact the only way I can hear what I recorded on track 1 is to actually have track 1 called up. If I change to any other track, no track 1 sound.

I'm totally lost. I don't have anything muted, and MIDI is set to off on these tracks. But the only track that will play back is the one that is called up. Tracks can not play back together

Someone please tell me wtf is going on because I am out of things to try

Dang MPC is locked in step with my ES8 like no one's b'ness. Wow. I have stayed away from MIDI for about 5 years now, only using the Motif to sequence. This will be an interesting transition. I've got the Es and the MPC out to an RME Fireface 800 and being recorded into Cubase at 192kHz. Butter.
