RoHS Compliant Gear - Lead Free

This may be the wrong place for this topic...

RoHS is messing things up right now. The MPC 2500 has gone through changes due to the RoHS compliance, basically leading to a 'shakey' future for reliability of products - lead free solder not holding as well, could explain malfunctions, etc, etc.

I don't think the production technology has caught up with RoHS in terms of solder. In the long term it may be better to use lead free, mainly around water sources. I don't think Akai used RoHS solder but the components may be.

A little more heat will probably solve the problem. It'll take longer to produce more MPCs, but they won't make your children slower.

I'm probably talking out of my @ss. But it would probably be more healthy for ME to use RoHS solder while I'm in the basement with no ventelation.

Edit: I get alot of my info from my brother, who's an electronic engineer. I asked him about RoHS about a year ago, so my information may be off.

Yeah I work making pcb's (printed circuit boards) and we have been migrating to lead free material and lead free solder, most of our customers who want Pb free boards request immersion gold or silver in place of solder. We have been running into problems with lead free material (copper coated substrates) and baking because of their resin systems. Although we havent recieved orders for very many boards that meet "RoHS" requirements, we have been doing a fair amount of boards that use lead free panels and solder. Headaches have arisen in many instances. Its going to take time to develop some long term lead free solutions in my opinion. It for the better though i believe.
