OS question and advice

HI, I'm a bit of a newb to this forum and I'm certainly not an MPC expert like most of you but I just had one question:

I went to the Sounds Expo in london and saw two 2500's next to each over. One with a different/newer OS to mine that seemed to be much better and one that was exactly the same as mine. Bearing in mind that it was an AKAI stand with AKAI representatives, I was recomended to go on the internet and pay about £30 to dload the new OS.
Im pretty sure aftre going on this site (http://www7a.biglobe.ne.jp/~mpc1000/mpc2500/) that it was the 5.08 which i thought was unnoficial and therefore I was always reluctant to dlaod something that I was scared would damage my little baby (MPC 2500) and cost me loads of money.

SO,
1) Do you think that I should dload the new OS or any type of OS
2) Will dloading an OS be risky, or make me a slower user (time to get used to it, harder, is it really needed etc..)
3) If Im using Cubase of something similar do I really need most of the benefits from the OS
4) and FINALLY, Dont you think it is weird that the MPC that the representative talked to me about had, what I'm pretty shure was, an unofficial OS.

would be grateful for any replies and please dont get pissed off If Ive said something or I say something stupid and Newbish.

I don't know why Akai has to be shady about it if they are actually involved with the JJ os. I mean they kind of have 2500 users by the balls don't they? If we want the features the JJ os provides, we will have to cough up $30.

being a total newb again - what is JJ? And do you think that I need it?

I know why, because users might get pissed if they are told they gotta pay another 30$ to get a proper OS for a machine they already paid 2000$ for. And yes, I know you could see it as just another upgrade besides the hardware ones, but this one's pushing it a little too far.

30 dollars per customer is not lining anyone's pockets with gold, esp to a company that sells thousand some dollar drum machines
if anything it just takes the pressure off them to fix numerous and persistent bugs

I don't think so. As I have pointed out months ago, you can not legally sell code that isn't yours. No company will let someone sell their code without permission. If what was written is true, it exposes the truth about paid OS upgrades. This is no different than what other companies are doing. This has nothing to do with lining pockets (I think)..but it is a way for customers to help pay for further development of the MPC's software.

So it's just numark then? I liked the whole idea of the renegade jenius programmers somewhere in japan.

I paid £900 for the MPC to start with. Personally I think that's more than enough to be contributing to the future development of that hardware's software. Akai sold me the hardware and thus Akai should support it fully. If they want to farm development to a third party, fine, but that third party should be on Akai's payroll and not funded by me.

What happens, for instance, if JJ's OS causes a terminal problem with my 2500? I doubt I'll get any support from Akai...

Sounds like he's just being honest to me. The JJ OS *is* more advanced than the Akai one.

I wouldn't interpret it as a conspiracy that Akai out to make more money from us. Having a freelancer working on the OS and him reaping the small financial benefits is better for their products in the long term. It might also free up their coders for work on R&D for future products.

Thats exactly why I havent upgreaded, plus I dont know enough to fix and problems that may occur.
Also - I know no-one else where I live thats into beatmaking at all yet MPC's. Thank god for the internet!!!
